WEATHER UPDATE

Big storm...as 2nd Family told us, in 20 years of living out there, they had never seen winds this strong.  Some local news stations reported winds in excess of 70mph.  2nd Family said it looked and felt like it could have been the beginnings of a funnel cloud, so they actually got into the middle of their house in a closet, just in case.

No damage to us, nothing major, but quite a bit of limbs down on parts of the property and lots of trees down on other properties and power lines.

The hives are OK.

The house is OK.

More than 100 homes in the area didn't have power most of the day but, thankfully, our house only lost power for a couple of hours.

More of an update later.  It's been a long day and just now getting to sleep.

  4. Phew! Mom said there had been high winds on that side but I hadn't thought they would be in your area. Glad that everyone is safe including the bees. I agree with Delores about the fairy circle too.

  5. We all get complacent about strong storms because most of us have never dealt with strong winds and the damage they can do. Have a pre-planned safe place to go to in the house. I've been in constant 75mph winds for 3 days and let me tell you the house constantly creaks like an old sailing ship and the neighbors garbage cans and lawn furniture slamming against the house is unsettling. This is why when building out buildings, sheds, etc be sure they are anchored or can withstand 100mph winds so you never have to deal with the financial loss or have to do the cleanup and expense of rebuilding them.

    1. Thank you for the great post. SO very true. We stayed in town (didn't own the farm then) during Hurricane Ike and I remember thinking the house (it's an old house too) creaked like an old ship too! I can't imagine 3 days. Yikes! We have a spot we could make into a safe place...thanks again for the great comment, I hope everyone reads and heeds! ;-)

  7. Don't plant any trees next to the house. In our case, we built our house next to all the trees and in the past 6 months, two limbs have fallen on our and our housekeepers car and cost thousands to fix. Our car was covered in insurance but the housekeepers was not and we weren't about to call our insurance again and tell them the same thing happened again.

    1. Thank you, I will make sure we keep that in mind. we are so grateful that we've had those trees near the house removed a couple weeks back. It's scary huh?
