STILL HOT AND DRY BUT

So here is the same shot I took last week, looking down the driveway.  It's now over three weeks since I last mowed.  Um yeah, the "zen machine" time this Summer has been pretty scarce.  But in this heat, I'm thinking that's OK.

I noticed a bunch of leaves on the ground...Autumn coming?  Or tree complaining about no rain?

I did stumble across this book at a yard sale on Saturday.  It was only 50 cents, can't beat that deal, so I got it.  And not just that we want to have roses, eventually anyway, at the farm, but because...

...it's from 1930!  Even though we have a
lot of new books of all kinds, there is just something I love about thumbing through the pages of an old book.  There is even a smell of an old book that I adore.

Here is Brisbane...sleeping under the ceiling fan and air conditioning at the house in town.  We are thinking he knows how to deal with the heat...so we hung around under the fans and air conditioning and did some reading...

But there is hope on the horizon!  This is the forecast for next week.  A really strong chance of rain for most days this week and then the weekend is clear.  Temps not over 100, so that's good, but creeping back up.

  1. Oh dear---those temps depress me! We've been near 90 this week---I'll be ok with it since I need that to ripen some tomatoes, but after that it must go!

    Stay cool

  3. I guess with the weather you seem to have down there in Texas your vegetable gardening is gong to be limited to spring and fall unless you can keep things watered when its hot. I just came in from working in my garden and am dripping with sweat. It's not as high temp wise here but humidity is unbearable. That's it for me today except for moving the sprinkler.

    1. Definitely....I'm already planning ahead to next Spring. I'm thinking just the March/April to June. There are a few good hot weather crops for us, okra, sweet potatoes go well all summer, stuff like that. But yeah, it's going to have to be Spring. Not sure I'll be able to get a jump for Fall since i've let the garden go in this heat (weeds taking over the beds) but we'll see. We have a looong Fall season so maybe.... ;-)

    1. Humidity is SO horrible when combined with the heat. It almost makes it unbearable. We do have some rain in the forecast but we'll see.

  5. It has been wonderful here lately. Still in the low 90's but with little humidity and a breeze has felt like early fall. Add in today's massive rain and now I am almost thinking it is almost sweater weatherl

    1. When the humidity is low it's not so bad. We had a breeze yesterday and it was not AS bad, ha. I wouldn't say we could match your 'wonderful' though, ha.

  6. Brisbane looks v comfortable. My father always said if you are too hot, or too cold, look for where the animals have settled, move them out and you will be in the perfect spot. He wasn't entirely wrong.

    1. Wise words! Yep, I actually scooted him over a bit and sat next to him to read. It wasn't so bad with the fan and the a/c going ha.

  7. Love the vintage cookbook. I like reading the old books to see what was popular and what were some of the techniques used. SOme are good tips and some are a little scary, ha. It has been in the 90's the last 2 days, then we had another torrent of rain this evening. I am so ready for Autumn. Stay cool and comfortable!

    1. Thank you! Oh how I can't WAIT until the cool weather. I want to do so much that i've not been able to do because it was monsoon followed by sahara desert, ha.

Old books are so much fun, sometimes you can even find an old tip that maybe is forgotten but still wise. :-)

  8. We are pretty darned desperate when we consider the mid-upper 90’s a treat! But just the thought of the triple digits taking a break is cooling to me.
I love that old book you found - one of my favorite things also. And it’s about roses!
Smart Brisbane - we can definitely learn from the animals!

    1. Yep, it wasn't SO bad was it? LOL! We just 'chilled' all weekend, mostly, and got a nice rain shower last night. Hoping for some more this week. Fingers crossed!

  9. 1st Man,

This summer hasn't been really too bad, we haven't had the high temperatures we had two years ago where the temperatures were 116 at 10 at night. The weatherman stated expect a cool front next week. One early morning next week is suppose to be 57 degrees............it sounds to me as if the fall temperatures are starting to roll in. Stay cool my friend!!!

  10. Our blower fan went out which means no air conditioning here since Sunday but we are first on their list for them to come out tomorrow (Wed.) to fix. Been dealing with ceiling fans and 3 floor fans; sleeping with ice packs and frozen wash cloths at night.
