LIVE PLANTS TRASH TO TREASURE

Regular readers know that I have a favorite place to look for bargains...our downstairs trash area!  Our building has trash chutes on every floor and they feed into a separate room, but for boxes and other things that people can't put in the chute, there is an area (indoor) near the loading dock where people can put the things they don't want.  I've found quite a few cool items over the last few years.

Here are the latest!

SOME PLANTS:

A palm of some sort

One...

Two...

Three...

Hedgehog Aloe

And a small bonus fourth!

Someone had moved out and we guess they decided they didn't want to take these plants with them and so they just put them next to the dumpster.  I came back upstairs and got the cart and went back down and brought them back in two trips.

We'll be honest, not sure what they all are for sure except the last small one.  We knew it was an aloe and a little research found it's a "hedgehog aloe vera".  I know the first one is a palm of some sort.  Other than the aloe which is small and table sized, the others are large, about 5 feet tall.  We feel like we should know what they are and when you all tell us in the comments, I'm sure we're going to read and go "Oh yeah!!!"

For now, they (the three large ones) are on the balcony getting sun and water.  The plan is to take them to the farm to live on the porch (shaded, unless they like the balcony?) but we need to figure out what they are so we'll know how to properly care for them.

Comment away!

  1. That hedgehog Aloe is pretty cool.
I would say that these are more of indoor plants than out door. Take your pictures to well known nursery, (like Calloways) and they would be able to tell you more on exactly what they are.

1st photo; looks like a Bamboo Palm; sometimes called Lady Palm; Rhapis excelsa (Lady Palm) (gardenia.net)

The 2nd could be Elephant ear or white bird of paradise; having banana - like leaves, (tropical) Costa Farms Flowering Plant in Basket & Reviews | Perigold

The 3rd looks about like the first; Clustering Lady Palm Tree (rhapis excelsa) – Urban Tropicals

    1. thank you, we did get some great scores. They will go to the farm and be on the shade of the porch. Might put the ones inside that would be better inside. As long as they can go a week without watering for now, ha.

  3. You made a great find-and-rescue! The 3 larger plants are porch/indoor plants. They could also live outside under a tree but would need freeze protection. Colleen is correct about the first being a palm. The second one looks like my Bird of Paradise plant that I have outside in my flowerbed but it could be a Banana Leaf Dieffenbachia. The last big one is a Schefflera – sometimes called an Umbrella plant. And you’re right about the last being an aloe vera plant.
These will really make your porch look lush, tropical, and cooling. Enjoy your free rescues!

    1. We kind of thought of it as a rescue too. NO sense in letting good, nice plants get trashed. It would be easiest for them to be porch plants. I think the balcony will have too much sun (and wind). Porch will be nice.

  8. wow.. I wish I could find beautiful plants like that. You lucky guys! Your #3 mystery plant looks a lot like my Vitex tree when I first got it.. it was only 3 ft tall and now, a few years later it's huge with gorgeous lavender flower-cones and it smells like Heaven. Here's a link; (look near the bottom of the page for a closer look at the leaves). https://leafyplace.com/vitex-trees/
    I really like your blog!
