PENNY CANDY JARS

Penny Candy Jars

I found these great jars on clearance the other day and one of my local lunch haunts.  I think they call the shape "Penny Candy" jars?  These are a bit smaller than their original counterparts.

For us, the better part is that they have screw top lids (the originals have a lid that just sort of sits on top).  Those will keep them sealed tightly and since we aren't at the farm all the time, we won't have to worry about bugs, moths, and mice getting into whatever we put in them.

Of course, therein lies the big conundrum.  Whaven't decided what to put in them yet but we will eventually.  We have many other jars with things like rice and lentils and flours, sugars etc.  These need something special in them I think.  Nuts?  Dried fruit?  Actual Candy?

As time goes by, and we are out there more often, we'll run across something we need to put in them that we just can't live without, though I still think candy is a good idea.  Maybe some of that old school fun 'retro candy'?

    1. Cereal? Hmm, not a bad idea. I like the granola idea. Love homemade granola.

  2. Hmmm...depends on how big they are I guess. Small small? Spices?

    1. Dang, I didn't put the size. They are probably 3 cup capacity?

  3. If I put candy in there they would all get eaten immediately!

    1. Well, at least for me it would only get eaten once a week, LOL!

  4. It's hard to tell size. I have a small one -- holds about a cup -- that I use for my vitamins. Puts them right out in front of my face so that occasionally I remember to take one.

    1. Vitamins is something I didn't think of. Not a bad reminder. Hmm, I could put one in the bathroom? I do forget to take vitamins.

  5. Thanks for defending me on the other posting. I was just curious if you spent time out there. I seem to have missed the posts from your overnights. You are doing a fine job with that place. I imagine when you do start entertaining big time it will be a blast because you've thought through everything.

    1. Aw, no worries, I totally understood what you meant. That's the way of thinking of it. For now, for us it works, for company, short visits are ok too, hanging out on the porch or walking around showing things. But for a big dinner party, or overnight guests, definitely still needs work, ha. You'll see it progress. Even something like getting these jars will help us store something we might need that might help us when we do have company.

  6. 1st Man,

How about some dehydrated fruits like strawberries, pineapple, apple, apricots?

    1. WOW! Now I really like that idea! Never thought about it. And hey, it's sort of prepping in plain sight, right? LOL! That's a good idea. I guess they'd need some oxygen absorbers in there to keep them dry? Thanks, will look into that for sure.

  7. They look awesome. You could put edibles that would last for awhile since you are only going to be there on the weekends. And, bright colors to give the space some color. Great find.

    1. They are the kind of thing that when I saw them I knew I wanted to get them. Even if I didn't quite know what for, ha. In my mind I pictured colors that would add some color to the room too. That dried fruit idea could work.

  9. Gumballs! Wrapped candies (remember, this time of year is good for halloween candies).

    1. Gumballs, now THAT would be colorful. I actually thought about candies, we have some at work right now but I was worried about it being a bit warm out there (though at this time of year, that's not really a problem). Thanks for the suggestion, will think about that too!

  10. Those are not tight enough to keep bugs out unless they have a rubber seal like canning jar lids.I doubt they do. Most don't. My friend kept some of those jars on the counter. She got pantry moths in them. Of course, some things come with eggs that will hatch after awhile.

They are cute, especially on clearance. I would use them for keeping a lid on the cookies, but not for storing anything that could be susceptible to attracting a pest. Mice will be deterred...lol.

  11. Since you already have storage for usual pantry items, I think these cute jars would be best used with items that are just for show. They also have the ability to serve as functional artwork depending on what you place in them and what the colors of the items are. You might fill them with anything from seashells, polished stines like agate or crystals, marbles or vintage toys. Actually they would be great to hold & show off any collectable that will fit. They could also make a statement about the seasons. For Fall they could hold acorns, unshelled nuts or small pinecones and at Christmas they could be filled with stick or ribbon candy, peppermints, small ornaments or jingle bells. The skys the limit onchat small items I am attacted to, are inexpensive and can be easily found. If you already have storage for everyday pantry items, I would use these cute jars to hold seasonal or collectable things that make you happy to look at. They also have the benefit of acting as artwork or just a collection of small things you have fun collecting. They would be great in my sewing room to display buttons, thread spools and colorful moni balls of yarn. I sure you will start to think of lots thing you would like to place in them, They would also be great on a bathroom shelf filled with soaps, Q-tips, colored bath oil beads. You might go to a craft store like Michaels and walk through noticing all the things that they have available that would give you the look that you desire,
If you ever want to make granola, that is delicious and really easy to make I recommend a recipie I found on Martha Stewart.com and it is called Farmstyle Granola. I tested many recipies and people always give this rave reviews. Friends & family like it so much I give it as Christmas gifts and even though I include the recipe with the gift, I will start being asked if I am going to make it again this year as soon as Thanksgiving arrives. The real maple syrup adds just enough sweetness without being too sweet and I add pecans and dried cranberries to give it a Holiday look, but you can add anything that you like for the fruit part once it comes out of the oven & cools. You need a large pan and you have to stir it several times while it bakes. For gifts I put it in quart zip-loc bags and then place it in a printed cellophane, close with a twist tie and then print the recipe on cardstock add some decoration and punch a hole in the tag and thread holiday ribbin through the hole and tie over the twist tie. It makes the best gift because everyone loves the taste and you can make a lot of it in one giant batch. I have found that using organic oats gives it more crunch and a better flavor than just using old fashioned oats. It costs a bit more, but really up Granola will only keep for up to 3 weeks in a sealed container. I have to keep the excess in the freezer to keep it fresh.
I am just barely old enough to remember a store my parents took me to regularly when I was little. The front window displayed a mind boggeling display of penny candies. I loved the root beer barrels and the wax bottles with the colored syrup inside. But I also remember Mary Janes, candy necklaces, wax lips, candy cigarettes (we thought those were so cool to :smoke" waiting at the bus stop in the early AM. Definitely not politically correct today, but in the 60 even most doctor chain smoked unfliltered cigarettes sad to say. There is a store online that carries all the penny candies and arranges them according to the decade they were popular going back to the turn of the century. You can still buy it all at pretty reasonable prices.

  12. I would certainly put dry 5 bean soup beans in there, even if I didn't use them often, just for pretty! Or do a seasonal thing, multi color corn kernals for fall, tiny ornaments for the holidays etc. Buttons, pretty rocks, shells or marbles would work also.

  13. I have a million jars lying around the house and amazingly, most of them sit empty. LOL...that doesn't stop me from buying more though.

  14. I have 5 penny candy jars and I keep Retro candy in them: Jaw breakers, Tootsie Pops, Mary Janes, Jelly Beans and Bazooka Bubble Gum...my daughter-in-laws' hate me! The 14 grandkids love me! I really should feel guilty but I don't!
