MINIATURE ROSES TRASH TO TREASURE

Regular readers know that I have a favorite place to look for bargains...our downstairs trash area!  Our building has trash chutes on every floor and they feed into a separate room, but for boxes and other things that people can't put in the chute, there is an area (indoor) near the loading dock where people can put the things they don't want.  I've found quite a few cool items over the last few years.

Saw these two little miniature roses that were in a window box sort of thing that was broken.  There were also some pots sitting around that someone threw away.  I couldn't let the roses go in the trash so I gently dug them up and grabbed a container...

I brought them upstairs, got my potting soil and planted them side by side in a large container.

I watered them down and they are happy!  We put them outside on sunny days to recharge.  One even has a bud on it, hope it blooms so we can "discover" what color at least one of them is, ha.

Second chance at life for them and flowers for us!  Just in time for Valentine's Day!

It's a win/win!

  1. Can I just say in this awful time of hate and discord that your blog gives me little hits happiness. I enjoy seeing how you pamper Mr. Hobart, the cooking, the recycling, and all the little bits you share. It’s a kind and nurturing vibe-thank you.

    1. That is the kindest note, thank you so much. We appreciate it and yes, the world does seem on fire now and this blog we hope is our little place of goodness. And even better goodness to come! Thanks again!

  2. OH; how lucky you are to get some wonderful treasures.
To me; that looks like it might be a yellow rose bud. I love yellow roses, as well as their meaning.
'Yellow rose is a sign that an angel is around you, and showering you with love, joy, and happiness.'
Enjoy your day and have a Fantastic weekend.

    1. I kind of thought yellow too. We'll see, I'll be sure and post an update when ti does. It's still a bud, maybe the transplanting stunted it but we'll see how it goes. I like the meaning of yellow roses and funny thing we want to plant some yellow roses at the farm. There is something about them that seems old school,, plus of course "Texas" and then what you said, all makes sense!

  3. What a wonderful find. Once, back when I actively dumpster dived, I found about a dozen poinsettia plants. The roses are so much better.

    1. I didn't post about it (need to get a picture) but I found three beautiful ones. We took them to the farm and they are there with the other plants just to see how they do. But yes, roses are much. more fun, ha.

  4. It was kind and kindhearted of you to rescue it. A friend gave me a miniature rose, just a grocery store find, four years ago. It is a sturdy little thing and still flourishing. It comes in for the winter and apart from watering it gets little care.

    1. I just couldn't let them go in the trash without giving them a second chance, ha. Our aloe vera are doing great (also downstairs finds, we brought them in for the freezes) but they are thriving. Fingers crossed for these.

  5. Miniature roses bring back memories for me. My grandmother and mother were fond of them and used to keep pots of them on their back porches. They were tough little things - you had to be tough, especially in Granny's world - but they were pretty. Good for you salvaging them. They won't demand much.

    1. Thanks, we hope so. I'm going to let them strengthen up and then I might separate them into two pots. Fingers crossed!

  7. By the way, bananas love the banana peelings.
When you plant a rose, throw in a banana peel in the hole.

    2. Roses also like Epsom salts., Just sprinkle a little around the base of the plant keeping it just a few inches away from the stem of the rose; rake it into the soil with your garden tool and water it in really well to dissolve the Epsom salt. You may want to do this in early Spring and reapply every 4-6 weeks or so. Just don't over due sprinkling the Epsom salt. I usually just use my hand and sprinkle very little; I would say about a Tablespoon but not much more than that.
Rake into the soil really well and water it down so that the salt dissolves.
OY you can mix the salt in jar of water until the salt dissolves and then pour.
that around the base of your plant.
Sometimes I will mix up a Gal. of water / salt and use it to water other shrubs, plants, etc. with it. It might say on the package of Epsom salts on how much salt to put into a gallon of water.
I store my open package of Epsom Salts in a clean; well dried coffee container.
Have a great evening and Enjoy the game.
      Go Chiefs.

    3. Thanks for this info. Sounds great. I do plan on planting some yellow roses around the new house. We like them and we think the yellow will look great against the barn red of the house.
