FENCELINE CLEARING

It was, finally, a good weekend.  The rain came in small showers, very widely scattered and it never lasted very long, so that was good.  I was able to mow almost everything I needed to and I edged everything as well.  I feel like the mowing is finally back to "normal", it wasn't high, it was easy to mow, and I didn't leave behind piles of grass clippings.  Zen machine time was truly 'zen'.

So here is the big accomplishment...this is the fence that encloses 2nd Family's back two acre pasture.  One side of it borders the length of our driveway and the other side borders our front yard so we kind of share responsibility.  However, neither of us has been too keen to do it so far this season, first with the rain and now with the heat.  In the end though, it got done.

This is the driveway side...it's clean and open, we like it...I took this picture after we had edged and cleared, but before I had mowed.  Such an accomplishment that we needed.  That fence line is several hundred feet long.  It's a looong walk with a heavy weed eater, ha.

This is standing in the same spot as above but looking toward the other part of the fence line.  It's all clear now too.  So how bad was it?  See next photo...

Above is the before picture of that same corner...

...and this is after!

This whole spot is clean and neat and tidy.  "R" from 2nd Family also helped us trim Ginger, the mesquite tree on the corner.  It's so nice to look at now, even though it was hotter than hell (heat index was 103).

I think I lost 5 lbs while doing it.

I don't know about you, but when I see tree and bush "clutter" like that, it drives me crazy, it just seems too "busy".  Now it's much more relaxing...sort of like when you clean out that cluttered garage or closet after staring at it for months.  It seems overwhelming at first but it's such a relief when it's done.

Side note, I spent two hours last night trying to figure out why I couldn't reply to comments.  I finally found that Google was having a glitch on some accounts, mind included.  Keep commenting, I'll catch up as soon as I can.

  2. Wow! There's a HUGE difference in the appearance around Ginger. I can't imagine doing all that in the heat and humidity. It's hard work in comfortable weather. I hope you get rested up at work this week!

    1. I know, while we were doing it I couldn't see the outcome but when it was done and I was sitting on the porch looking at it it was such a striking difference. Lots of rest before the next weekend. Thanks!

  4. That is a beautiful piece of property. Job well done and I know it was hard work. I would love to live on a farm again, but it would cost me a fortune for the upkeep.

  5. 1st Man,

You've accomplished a lot of work out on the farm.
Grass cutting, edging, and clearing/cleaning brush.

The rain stopped yesterday late afternoon, so this morning I went a head and cut all the grass, did some edging.......and now, I'm relaxing sitting in front of the computer responding to blog posts.
Since you do brush clearing so well.........I could use another hand up here!!!!
    Teasing!!!!
    Have a great week!

    1. That was an all day job for sure (spread over two days, with a few naps here and there, ha). If you were close by, I'd gladly help if you needed it. :-) Have a great week yourself!!

    1. It's funny how when you're doing it, and it's so hot and you're sweating and dying of thirst and your muscles hurt you just think you can't possibly finish but when you do it's so worth it, ha.

  7. 1st,
Looking marvelous!!! Looking at the picture of the driveway fence line made my hands and back hurt, I know roughly what the distance between fence post would be and know that was “A Whole Lot Of Weedeating”!!! But it really looks neat and tidy, and this is coming from a guy that mulch mows the woods around the house. So when I say I know the time and effort you have put in, I really know. As always, enjoying the progress of your work. – G

    1. Hey there! Yes, it is a long haul as they say. I think the need and tidy is what i like. When it's out of control, it's kind of frustrating. Of course all the weeks of rain let it get out of control, but now I intend to keep it under control. The progress is slow but steady. That's all the matters, right? Ha.

  8. Fantastic job! It looks so neat and clean and inviting. That was a LOT of work - and in the heat and humidity! I hope there was a big pitcher of iced tea waiting for you afterwards!

    1. There was some iced tea but my favorite guilty pleasure after hot yard work is diet dr. pepper. Reminds me of summers with my grandparents (they always had dr pepper in the fridge). But there was a pitcher of tea. I need to make some sun tea soon. LOVE that.

    1. Ha, I never thought about it but yeah, lots of green. Except 2011/2012 during our drought, then it was 50 shades of beige. Thanks!!

  11. They make a mower that doubles as a weedeater so all you do is push. Cub cadet has one.

  12. congratulations - yes, very relaxed-looking. and along the driveway, am i also seeing the vitex you planted? i've been eager to see how those turn out. i have two, of two varieties, that i've been nursing along in containers through two winters until i decide where to plant them. i'm apprehensive because here in NE ohio, while they do die back to the ground, the roots are so extensive, i'm afraid of getting them too close to the house or water/sewer lines, etc. --suz in ohio

    1. Yes, they are doing well, though slow growing. But they did bloom, and cut off all the spent flower heads so maybe we'll get some blooms again soon. I hadn't heard that about the roots. I Know true Lilac can have lots of invasive roots and spring up 20 feet away. II guess these must be smiler. I'll keep you posted. They sure are pretty when they are in bloom.
