BLACK FRIDAY 2015

GOOD OR BAD...IT'S HERE!

It's not something we really participate in.  We don't like the crowds and fighting people for $50 off on a TV.  It's just kind of nice to relax on the day after Thanksgiving and recover from the eating.  Plus, it seems the older we get, the more "anti-crowd" we become.  We'd rather have a quiet day at home or the farm and off work.

For those outside of the United States who may be unfamiliar with this...it has traditionally become the day when stores have their biggest sales of the year, and they move from being "in the red" to "in the black" (i.e. profitable).  So stores have become known for having crazy good deals on this one day of the year.  Deals so good that many times, people camp out in line for days before Friday just to get that large flatscreen TV for $100 or something like that.  Most deals though are just a little better than a regular big sale.  They lure people in with a few really amazing deals because it gets them larger crowds who might buy something else.  No thanks, we'll stay in and pay regular sale price later on if we decide we need something like that.

Our weather today is questionable.  I'm going to try to get to the farm to work on those raised beds but rain is coming yet again.  I could put it off to Saturday but the weather is even MORE questionable then.  I'm so over this crazy weather...we need a different kind of consistency, ha.

Do YOU get out and fight the crowds for good deals today?

  1. I'm doing some online shopping today from the comfort of the couch!

    1. That's the BEST way to do it, ha. Vintage Swatch watches, ah the memories. I Had a TON of those (and still do, in storage).

    1. Online is the way I like to shop too, so many options....and just as good deals most of the time.

  3. I had a cousin who loved the after-Thanksgiving sale. She would get up in the dark and and, with Christmas list in hand, knew exactly where to find what she wanted in the 3 or 4 stores where she shopped. Were it not for her, I would think this day senseless, useless, and stupid. But, remembering Sybil and the enjoyment she found, I can see the adventure in the day.

    1. I have friends that do the same...getting up at the crack of dawn and standing in lines...but you are so right, people find joy and fun in the day and I guess we can't fault them for that, ha.

  4. Black Friday started at 6 pm on Thanksgiving Day. I went right after noon and looked at all that was on sale, bought one food thing, and left. There was no way I was going back at 6 pm to fight for anything. I would have enjoyed an overhead view of the fracas. Year before last, a fist fight broke out in our store over towels. ONE YEAR, someone was shot over towels in another store. The savings is not that good and it's on the cheapest towels, anyway!

Later, this evening I will go back to see what $1.99 videos are available. There were no crowds around 7 pm last year.

  5. No way, I don't go near stores the whole weekend. And since I make most of my gifts I rarely do Christmas shopping, if I do it is usually online. They have taken a beautiful holiday and it's traditions and made it too commercialized, stressful and hectic for me. I've gone the other direction and do it more like my ancestors did.

  6. No way do I want to join in that commercial madness. It's not worth saving a few dollars. For my gift-giving, I give jars of homemade soup, home-canned goods, home-baked goodies, or produce from my garden and orchard. I enjoy that so much more than fighting crowds.
Hope the weather holds for you so you can go out to the Farm.

  8. We have Black Friday in Canada now...I think this is about the third year for it. In the past we have stayed away from the stores but this year was the year our Grandson wanted to do his Christmas Shopping on Black Friday....so.....of we went. You know, it wasn't all that bad and he did get some good buys.

  9. 1st Man,

I try to avoid crowds, and shopping during the holidays.
The last time I went shopping on a black Friday, over 11 years ago.

  10. Our question is always "why"? Why would any reasonable person subject themselves to that kind of insanity? Is that really the most important thing in ones life? We don't shop! and all the hype from the media about 'well, everyone is shopping online now' is just that_ marketing hype. Our question centers around just how much more "stuff" does one need? We are trying to give more away. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
