DAY OF THE DEAD PURCHASES

Longtime readers will know while we enjoy Halloween, we love the holiday "Dia De Los Muertos" or "Day of the Dead" in Mexican culture.  As Texas has such a widespread and growing Hispanic population, we are seeing this more and more here right alongside Halloween decor.  It's such a great reason to celebrate.

For those who want to know more about it, the Disney/Pixar movie "Coco" is amazing and you'll learn all about it.  Another movie that has stories related to this holiday would be "The Book of Life".  Coco though is the best.  We promise you'll be in tears (happy) at the end.

Anyway, I like to hit the stores for some "after the holiday" sales to add to our box of decorating supplies.  This year I found some napkins, a ceramic dish, and some cool candles.  I also found these unique items, all were anywhere from 50% to 75% off:

This cookie cutter that gives you the shape of the skull.  Now of course this just gives you a cookie skull...for the colorful frosting, you're on your own, ha.  I told 2nd Man that I would volunteer do that part.

Now last year (or maybe the year before, the pandemic has messed with time, ha), I found a large skull cake pan by Wilton.  This year I found this mini cake pan (also by Wilton) that makes six cake skulls.  Again, decorating up to you, ha.

Then I found this.  What is this?  It's a tortilla warmer!  It unzips halfway around and is made with some sort of insulating material between the fabric layers.  You put flour or corn tortillas in it to keep them warm or you can put them in with a damp paper towel and microwave for a few seconds to warm them up.  We could get any sort of random tortilla warmer but I mean come on, it SHOULD be this type right?

And last but certainly not least, I found these playing cards with the sugar skull design on every card.  They are really fun and colorful and will be a great addition to our game cabinet at the farm, though I might have to challenge 2nd Man to a card game or two until then.

    1. I was looking for some but missed the sales. Of course I could order on Amazon. That's a great idea to paint some and put in our jars for decorations.

  3. I love the decorated skulls! The skull pan should work for brownies, at least for me.

    1. I think that's what draws me to it as well, so pretty and colorful. It takes something some might see as scary and makes it happy and beautiful.

    1. Thanks and oh yes, I forgot to post prices. The cards were $2 pkg, and the warmer and the pan were $3 each and the cookie cutter was $1.

We would urge people to read up on Day of the Dead, it's a fascinating and sweet celebration of life.

  6. Sorry ... you need to do a bit of proofreading: " ... we love the holiday "Die De Los Muertos" or "Day of the Day" in Mexican culture."
I agree that Coco is a wonderful movie and, yes, you will need tissues!

    1. I love a bargain, ha. But you know there were other things I could have bought but I make the "executive decision" on what we "need" vs what I'd just be getting only because it's on sale. We'll bake with the pans, we'll play cards for sure, and we've already been using the tortilla warmer. So we go with good deals and practical, ha.
