MAXIMIZING OUR OVEN USE

Not too long ago, we posted a picture of our meatloaf meal.  We ate it over the weekend and it was so good.  Thankfully, 2nd Man made two.

Sliced meatloaf

Here it is (you can just see the edge of the other one on the side).  This one was sliced up and vacuum sealed for the freezer.  We found that two fit side by side on the largest sheet pan we have, so we just double up the recipe and make two.

We do the same thing when roasting chickens...

Two roasted chickens

...we do two of those as well.  Our philosophy for cooking things like this is that if we're going to heat up the oven to cook one anyway, two can cook at the same time and temperature and we have future meals ready to put up in the freezer.  For the chickens we will have one for immediate dinner and then when the other has cooled down, I pull all the meat off and vacuum seal it for using in other meals.  It's like having a rotisserie chicken at the ready most any night we need one.

Now if we could just figure out how to get two turkeys in one oven at the same time, ha.  Side note, don't those chickens look delicious?  Now I'm hungry!

2nd Man has always wanted double ovens in his kitchen.  If we end up with that at the farm, then we could have 4 chickens and 4 meatloaves and 2 turkeys at a time, LOL!

Anyone else do this?

  1. Oh, Yes. I figured like you do, as long as you have the oven going; double up on your cooking items; saves time and energy.
I have always wanted a chef's oven so you might take that into consideration for the future. One problem with me is that I don't like cooking with gas, plus my kitchen isn't large enough for a chef's oven.

2nd Man; found just the oven for you. Wouldn't this be sweet to have? https://www.katom.com/895-CCO1NDBL.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMItfrD88q79QIV4RTUAR3fQwNFEAQYByABEgJYPvD_BwE

    1. Oh please don't give him ideas, ha. Those would be awesome though. We won't be able to have gas out there, he likes electric (convection ideally) for baking. We might go with induction. Time will tell.

  2. If you spatchcock your turkeys, two will fit in an oven. )It makes them flat.)

  5. I once put 24 put 24 sweet potatoes in the oven plus lots of other things for many meals to come. When I cook a turkey, I try to put in some potatoes and carrots beside it on the rack on foil. I love a full oven for electricity saving and food access.

    1. That's a great idea too!! We were thinking of like two main dishes at the same time but like you said, putting other veggies in there for other future uses is so smart! Thanks!

  6. I have had double ovens before and loved them! My current kitchen would have to be totally refigured to have them again, but then__who knows what could happen here!

    1. Double over are on our possible remodel list, we have another idea in mind as well, we'll see how it plays out. We used to always joke that if we ever had a house built from scratch, we'd start with the kitchen and then add on the other rooms, ha.

  7. A very smart way to have 2 meals prepped for the cost of one! Plus it’s so convenient and a big time saver to have the 2nd meal already mostly done.

  8. The meatloaf looks absolutely delicious. I do love meatloaf. Now, you are convincing me to get one of those vacuum sealers:) I do think about it every now and then but have never gotten one. I just ordered an ice cube maker so that I don't have to make ice cubes in the freezer where the trays take up space.
