GREAT EMERSON QUOTE

Saw this ceramic tray in a store the other day.  While I've always enjoyed Ralph Waldo Emerson, I hadn't heard this quote before:

Ralph Waldo Emerson quote
It came right after a time I was trying to explain to a coworker how we choose to be who we are.  I was asked why and how I'm always so upbeat and so positive about things and I said that it's because that is what I long ago decided to be.  There's no reason to be negative or down all the time, indeed what does it gain yourself or those around you?  And now, it's sort of become my nature.  It's the person I've become.  It's part of me.

So when I saw this, I got a shiver.

Thank you Mr. Emerson...

Anyone ever find a personal quote that hits home for you?

  1. I have a few that I could post but will only list a couple.
'Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter.'

  2. I have heard that and similar ones. I have had a great tragedy in my personal life that is a real downer to repeat or to hear. It is not trivial. I always had the reputation amongst friends as being fun and upbeat. After two years I finally returned to the person I was. Consequently, few know of my pain. However, being cheerful is not the same as being happy, not truly happy to the core of my being. Okay, tmi?

I knew a woman that always had the same sad and tragic happenings in her life. Finally, I had to just scrape her off my plate. No matter the occasion I and all around us were treated to the continuing saga of the men who mistreated her, past and present, the doctors who would not treat her correctly, and the relatives who did not ever understand. She dominated every conversation with sadness at festivals where we accidentally met, and people literally ran from us.

All that said, some people make uninformed decisions due to their ses and past experiences. You can't do better until you know better.

    1. I understand what you mean. I really understand. You are so right, being happy is much different that always being cheerful. People really can bring others down with them can't they?

Thanks for sharing even a part of your story.

  3. I kind of agree with the old let a smile be your umbrella train of thought. I can make myself happier or more miserable than any other person can, so why would I elect to be anything other than generally happy, especially if it ultimately rests on me.

  4. The quote I found rather eye-opening, oddly enough, is from Sir Francis Bacon: "There is no most excellent beauty which hath not some strangeness in the proportion."

I was about 13 when I first read it, an age where most of us are trying hard to fit in... how refreshing to think, after reading this, that it is our 'oddities' which make us beautiful. =)

    1. I have read that Sophia Loren's facial proportions are all wrong. However, she is definitely a beauty.

  5. I like that one.

my personal quote is "you can stand me up at the gates of hell and I won't back down" - tom petty. I've been through plenty of shit in my life, but I have great inner strength and have overcome the bad times.

  6. Love that quote and your outlook!

Many years ago, my aunt gave me some plaques to hang potholders on - they were little sunflowers and had this on them, which I love:
    Swap a smile,
    Trade some cheer,
    Let’s be happy,
    While we’re here.

  7. I like your quote as much as the one I've chosen most of my life.
"No matter where you go, there you are." - Buckaroo Bansai

A more recent one comes from Mike Dooley
"Thoughts are things; choose the good ones."

I have always appreciated that it put the power to choose how you behave or react in your own hands.

Have a beautiful day; I'm going to!
