GARDEN AT THE OFFICE

I have been meaning to post this since last Summer and it got pushed down the list and I forgot. So here it is now, and with Spring around the corner, seems like good timing, ha.

This is at my office.  In front of the building in one of the flower beds.  We began noticing a vine spreading and I told my coworkers it looked like some sort of squash.  Wasn't sure what.  Then someone at the building put in...

...a trellis!

That made us wonder if it was growing on purpose or accidental? Did someone toss something in there and this sprung up? Or did one of the groundskeepers do it on purpose? We'll never know the answer to that, but it didn't take long to figure out what they were...

Cucumbers!

Here are a couple doing their thing.  We watched them with great joy every morning and afternoon coming and going from work.  We would notice a few would be missing from morning to evening or evening to morning.  We weren't sure if it was animals or other office people in the building.  We finally thought "we want some too!" and so I would occasionally step in and get one for us.

Here is one that I grabbed one off the vine and brought it home.  Less than 20 minutes after pulling it...

...it ended up sliced into our salads and it was SO good.  We can't wait to have fresh cucumbers at the farm!

Still thinking about where that new garden is going to go in relation to the house!

  1. What a wonderful surprise! A fun thing to watch and wonder what it was. And then to have fresh cucumbers to take home for salads!

    1. It was fun and for me enjoying gardening it was fun to watch and then watch my coworkers get excited every day finding a new bloom or tiny vegetable. We didn't get many but it was fun while it lasted and reminded me why the garden is always a good thing.

  2. I planted a few potatoes that had sprouted and a pack of cucumber seeds today. The big tomato fields are being picked now, I saw a number of big trucks on there way to the packing houses here in Ruskin, Fl. On south of us sweet corn and green peppers are coming on.

    1. Gardening is so fascinating to me, even in the back yard, i can't imagine a full scale operation like that. It must be fun to see.

    2. Right now, u-pick strawberry fields are open for u pick. The strawberry Festival was last week, and it is a big deal so now berries are very cheap if you want to go pick. Usually, 2 o3 lbs. for a dollar. Tomato fields will be open for u-pick in a month or so. They are picking the green ones now for shipping. We have 3 tomato packing plants in our little town. Cows love them so when they have ones that are odd size or not packing worthy, they haul big loads to cattle fields. I found that interesting, I did not see that in Ohio growing up.

A very thoughtful person who ever planted it.

  4. You have so much land available to use, I think you could plant a garden wherever you want one!

    1. Ha, so true! Of course, we do need to figure out a place close to water at least, so it will have to be close to the house (plus convenience for gathering and bringing back in). We just want to know the best place in relation to the house, and it will have to be away from the septic spray so yeah, decisions, ha.

  5. Septic spray? On your ground?
A kitchen garden tells you where to plant a garden. It will be close by the back door...lol. Make sure there is a faucet near by to water it. Of course, a larger garden elsewhere is in order, too.
