THE LOSS OF A BELOVED BLOGGER

It is with heavy heart that I must post about the passing of Granny, better known to us as Annie's Granny from Annie's Kitchen Garden.  Sadly, she lost her short but valiant battle with cancer last night.  Her daughter Amy has posted a tribute to her at Granny's blog.  What a great life and sweet woman.

Our personal experience with Granny started when she somehow found our little blog corner of the world.  She wrote a sweet post about us and it drove a lot of new visitors to us and linked us up with some great new friends, many of whom still visit us regularly.  She actually went back to the very beginning of this blog and read through every post.  She must have been bored silly with some of those early posts, I told her at the time that she was a brave woman, ha.

She had so much garden wisdom and experience to share and it's sad that a lot of that is now lost to the gardening world.  I say a lot, but not all, because of her blog...she posted so much advice and tips and tricks (her SEED MAT TUTORIAL is awesome!), I truly hope her blog stays up for everyone to enjoy and learn from for years to come.

She named her blog Annie's Kitchen Garden (more recently changed to Annie's Family Garden), in honor of one of her adorable puppies, Annie.  To give equal time, Otto is the other puppy (and equally adorable, ha).

How cute is this face?
Carol is survived by a large and caring family, her wonderful husband Jack, her children, her 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren plus one more great grandchild on the way.  Now THAT'S how you plant the seeds for the future!

Many of us have been "Gardening for Granny" (click link for details).  2nd Man and I will continue to garden in memory of her.  And I better do a good job of it, because she'll be watching now!

I asked her daughter about donations and she said that the one her Mother always donated to was http://www.humanesociety.org

In one of her final posts, she mentioned that lilacs were among her favorite flowers and she said she must get some for her desk...

...not sure if she ever got them, so these are for her.

Goodbye sweet Granny, we luv ya.
You WILL be terribly missed.

Instead of replying to comments, I will just let them all stand as a tribute to this sweet lady that touched all of our lives.

  4. I've read Granny's blog for a couple of years, especially recently, but I missed that comment about lilacs. With your reminder, now I will always think of Granny whenever I see or smell lilacs. She seemed to be a very straightforward blogger writing about her gardening, yet so much of her kind and wise personality came through. I love your tribute, and I think Amy's tribute on Granny's blog page is beautiful.

  5. 1st Man - Amy's tribute is beautiful, as is your post. I am very sorry that Granny passed, but she has left behind so many children and grandchildren...she sure knew how to spread her seeds!!! but by providing all of the gardening advice on her blog, and with so many of us going to that blog for reference and new ideas, she will keep spreading seeds. we are still gardening this year, in memory of Granny. also, we pledged a certain amount in order to print Granny's blog....now that this project is no longer going to happen, we will still honour our pledge to the Humane Society in Granny's name.

thank you for a beautiful post. your friend,
    kymber

  9. Beautiful tribute to such a wonderful person. Thanks so much for writing this. Lilac was my grandma's favorite scent, too. Think of them both now when I smell it.

  10. Such kind words about a feisty, lovely woman. She had so much more energy, even in her last days and weeks, than I do most of the time. Granny was an amazing gardener and my gardens will always fall short of her beautiful, organized ones. I just made seed mats this morning and thought of her, of course. I also passed along her method to my sister-in-law. Granny guided me through my first potato planting last year, and I thought of her Tuesday when we planted them for this year. She will always be a part of my gardening. She certainly left behind quite a legacy!

  11. Carol was always such a pleasant read over the last 2-3 years following her blog. If I remember correct, she was one of the first people that I started to read along with Two Men.

    Carol will be missed greatly.

  23. I just saw this and agree that Granny impacted so many of us so profoundly. It is amazing that one woman had such a great impact on so many from her kitchen and garden. She was really a powerful lady. I think she really was so lovable and I just found out tonight about her passing and am shocked, and so sad. I knew she had this horrible cancer but hoped it’d be a bit longer. I guess if anything, at least she didn’t have to suffer too long. I loved her so much and she was so sweet to me and seemingly to everyone. Talk about someone who walks the walk and talks the talk of being a good person. She also had a funny sense of humor and a really intelligent edge that made her research and build and learn to make and change things to improve over time what she needed, sometimes out of small pieces of nothing and make it work into what she needed. She really is a memorable person in my life forever. I’m so grateful the blog is left up. I did ask her what her favorite flower was only a few weeks prior to her passing and she told me Sweet Peas. I told her that will now be called my granny flower and she was really happy about that. I also knew that she was not doing well and she was having a hard time. She really was amazingly nice about everything until the very end. I admire her strength of character when facing her own mortality. She told me she had a favorite family member that she knew would be there to meet her in heaven so she was ok with dying when the time happened. She just was sad to leave the people here like her family and friends. I think we will definitely carry on her legacy with all we’ve learned. What a sad day and I found out a week late. ugh. Hope her family are ok. Her hubby looked so sad in the photos. I wish I could do more for him now.
