YARD BELL, INSPIRATION THURSDAY

Yard Bell, photo randomly sourced on internet but possibly via Lehman's
I can't tell you how badly we want one of these yard bells.  They were popular in the 1800's on homesteads to call people to dinner or even to warn of impending dangers (storms, fires, marauders, etc).  Of course, as society changed and doorbells and other technology came about, there was no longer a use for them and they fell out of favor.

We think one would be awesome mounted to a post in the yard or perhaps even on the porch.  With 2nd Family living at the front of the property, we could even use it to communicate with them ("come up for dinner" or maybe "the zombies are coming", etc LOL).

Update:  I forgot to post the link to where these are for sale.

Click here: Large Cast Iron Farmhouse Dinner Bell for Amazon

or

Click here: Yard Bell for Lehman's

The Lehman's version is original and made in USA, the Amazon one is probably made elsewhere.

Be inspired!

  3. Why not take inspiration from the pic above and mount it onto one of your red barns - and use it to call the animals in at night? Animals learn very quickly, especially when food is involved... ;)

    1. I like that idea....mostly because then I'd have a reason to have TWO, ha. The barns are far enough away from he house to be a walk to call people for dinner. But if we had one near the porch and another at the barn, well, heck, that would twice as awesome, ha. Thanks!!!

    1. Dang, I wish I could! You should fix it up with some cool painting. You are very talented at that. It would have new life on your farm. :-)

  6. Love those bells as well! You really should get one for the yard/porch/barn - would be a fitting addition to your farm. Plus they're easy to install and inexpensive. AND there's the zompocalypse to prepare for! Haha

I have one mounted on my barn and use it to call the old hearing impaired horse up for his meals:

    1. That is SO awesome (I looked at your picture) and what a great reason you have it. I will look for some more, as Dani suggestion, I could put one on the barn and have one at the porch. And you're so right...those zombies could show up any day, HAHA!!!

  8. My mother always wanted one to call people to dinner. She eventually started using a small hand bell but it drove my father wild being summoned by a bell. I don't think he had a right to be angry really, given he use to summon us with a loud whistle!

    1. LOL! I just posted above before reading your comment, my Dad called me in with a whistle too. I always said I felt like a dog responding to that whistle, ha. My ears perked up and I was off and running, ha.

  9. Wow, does that bring back memories! They still make and sell them, along with the old 'triangles''.

Hmmm, a ship's bell in the back garden..... Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. I remember the triangles, those were used as well, and even more so as a dinner chime. I will check that out too. Thank YOU!

  10. When my children were little and we lived in this neighborhood, not on a farm, I really wanted a big bell to summon them. I am quite sure I would have been deemed a "Public Nuisance" nd my bell-ringing privileges revoked. Love it. Let's all get one.

  11. 1st Man,

I love these bells! After reading this post, I remembered my old iron dinner triangle bell. It's stashed somewhere in this house. My husband bought it for me while we lived in TX. When we moved it was wrapped and placed in a box. I'm going to have to find it and hang that baby. Thank you for reminding me :-) Oh and by the way, I hope you get one of these bells to hang at your front door.

I'm working on 2nd Man to get one. :-)

  12. OMG, you rattled my chain when I seen your bell. Love it
I'm a bell collector but I still haven't gotten me like the one you have but still looking for just the right one. I passed up a real nice one a few years ago cause I just didn't want to pay the price they where asking.
I do have an old triangle dinner bell that my parents used to have of which I have hanging by my back door. I use it when hubby is working in his workshop and has the large saw going.

    1. That's awesome. I think it's neat you collect bells. The triangle bells are cool too. I had forgotten about them (thanks for the link by the way) and I think there might be a place for one of those on the porch and a yard bell in the yard by the barns... ;-)

  13. I have one right by the corner of the porch, been there almost 30 years. We do live on a farm and with that we had kids on the so called back 40 or even down the road at a friends house. All my children knew that when I rang my bell no matter where they were they were to come to the house. My neighbors also knew and would make sure if they seen one or had one to send them home. Great times.............................................thanks for the link
