Three weeks ago today, I was in ICU recovering from two heart attacks and two stents. I was supposed to have my first cardiologist followup a few days ago, but the doctor is stuck out of town due to weather so they rescheduled me for next Wednesday.
Well, just extra days to get even better for my numbers, right?
We've been using a grocery store by the apartment and delivery from Walmart and a few other places but with delivery, tipping, etc, it gets expensive when added on to the batch of groceries.
We cleaned out our pantry and freezer to make space. We've got a big shopping list (all healthy stuff!) and need to stock up. Plus we need to replace some things we have (like tomato sauce and diced tomatoes) with "NO SALT" versions. Lots of veggies and fruits. Whole wheat and whole grain items. Nuts. Ground turkey, ground chicken, skinless chicken, turkey bacon, etc.

Yep, I told 2nd Man I'd push the cart. It was good to use it to move. Did great and we got a lot of good food.
DeleteGreat to hear you can get out and about a bit now. I had a S.C.A.D. heart attack ten years ago but luckily have had no problems since so it is possible to get back to your life if you do it the right way and it sounds like you are. 11 out of 10 for effort...sorry,used to be a teacher.

My daughter has just adopted a cat which was picked up by a seagull and dropped on it's head when four weeks old which has resulted in her having odd screeching episodes and nobody wanted to take her. But on medication Sky (named by the rescue centre!) is a lot better and she can cope with it. However my daughter only had Sky for two weeks when she noticed that when my daughter wore a certain shirt some mornings then she was going to work and would be out most of the day and Sky then went immediately to the door and stayed there while she ate breakfast then tried to stop her going. Other days she remains calm. So cats are very clever creatures but then as the servants of Hobart you both knew that! Two spoiled cats I know of now but I would guess there are many more out there.

DeleteGlad to hear you are doing great ten years post. In ten years I'll be 68 so I'm happy to hear. OMG about the seagull, but so happy Sky has found her forever home. They are fascinating and wonderful animals for sure. Hugs to you!!
Hope you enjoyed your outing. No matter how chilly it may be, that fresh air is good for a person. Getting good exercise pushing that grocery cart around is a good thing. You may think you are feeling better; just don't over do it.
ReplyDeleteDon't hardly use table salt here, but I do make and use a salt substitute; (mostly for hubby) My, I'm more of a black pepper person.
When we go out for a burger and fries, we tell them, 'Hold' the salt.

Thank you, it was a good day. I didn't even get tired. But I bet I'll sleep well tonight, ha. Yes, I have to remember not to push myself and I don't feel like I did. Heart rate stayed under 100 and it was actually kind of quiet in the store. We use our salt that we blogged about (which actually because it has more minerals it has less sodium) but we never use salt after the fact, just to cook with and even then it was never a lot. Now we use even less. Salt substitute like a homemade Mrs. Dash or something? I'll have to google that. We have so many great seasoning blends and we checked them all for "hidden salt' and got rid of the ones with salt. And I am definitely a black pepper person, LOVE that on my food.
DeleteLove what you said about the fries I heard someone say once that if you ask for no salt fries, you get fresh because they have to make them then if they have the others already made. But no fries for me right now....

I use strictly spices for flavor, not blends or low-sodium or salt substitute. Tommy did resalt every plate of food. Now, he salts one out of twenty plates of food. He is learning not to need salt. Don't get me wrong, I love salt on potato chips and French fries, but I rarely ever taste either.
I am checking into eating raw garlic to clear arteries. It is not as beneficial cooked. Have you checked into this? I am not so sure I can.

DeleteYep, we are aware of that. We definitely look for the healthiest and found some uncured (so it doesn't have the exact same stuff as regular bacon) and he cooks it with no added fat. We have a couple slices per week which is I think how they recommend it. So in love with bacon, had to have a good alternative. It costs more but it's much better (in moderation of course) than regular bacon.
DeleteYep, just using only our non salt blends. So many good ones out there now. Have done raw garlic a few times and I love garlic so much anyway. Not the best when you have to go to work the next morning, ha, but it's good. I read that you can grate it on a rasp or microplane and add it to your food after it's cooked or as a topping. Might have to try that.
