THE REVEAL

You probably saw a picture yesterday...it was a closeup of the handle for the tailgate of...guess what?

A pickup truck, we bought a farm truck!

It is a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado.

It came from a customer at my office.  It has 225,000 miles but was just one owner and he kept it maintained mechanically.  A few years ago he retired and it's just been in the garage.  They drove it around a few times a year just to keep it running.

It's in pretty good shape on the exterior with no major damage, though it does need new tires.  The engine is in great shape even with the high mileage.  The price was just so unbelievably low we couldn't pass it up.

The bed has the usual scratches and scrapes and there is a dent on the tailgate.  We were thinking about a bed liner.  Sure a bed liner is there to protect your bed from damage in the beginning and this seems a little after the fact but it might help clean it up a bit.

We'll spare you an interior photo because we want to use it as a before and after...after we have it detailed, ha!  It's a bit rough, spilled coffee, the seats are stained, dirty steering wheel, the door and arm rest are dirty etc.  It's not ready for its closeup just yet ha.

This model is what they commonly called a "work truck".  It is not extended cab, there is no extra third door or four doors, no bells and whistles.  It's automatic and has cold a/c that's all that we need.  Oh and it even has windows with handles to "roll them down", ha!

Best of all for what we wanted at the farm, because of not having an extended cab, it's got a full size bed.  I can get lots of bags of soil in there, landscape timbers, wood for raised beds, furniture finds, etc.

We're going to keep it in town for a few weeks, get new tires, have the interior detailed, get the oil changed, etc.  We want to just make sure it's in the best running condition.  Then we can go pick up (pun intended ha) soil, move a couple of large pallets we have in storage out to the farm, new landscape timbers etc.  It will be left at the farm after that for when we need it.

It might not look like this classic farm truck, but after all these years and posts we have had about loading whatever car we were driving at the time with plants and bags of soil, pieces of lumber, etc, we now have a vehicle we can use specifically FOR that.

And we couldn't be more excited!

  1. Awesome! Congratulations on your new / used driving machine. Every Texas farmer needs a pickup. Great for hauling so many things in that you wouldn't be able by using a car. You are really going to enjoy it.
    Now, next question; you planning on mounting a small greenhouse on the truck bed like your previous photo? :}
Bed liners; They have Spray-in bed liners which adhere to your truck bed’s contours and fits like your factory paint job. Gives you a unique custom look for your truck.

When we bought our used truck back in 2001 it had a Rhino bed liner already in it which is really nice. Our truck right now has over 350 thousand miles on it.

    1. Thank you! Yep a pickup, no matter the size, is almost a requirement. And white too! ha. LOL on the greenhouse. Well heck if we can make it to 350,000 that'll last us forever ha.

  2. You'll certainly get your money's worth out of it, if you own any amount of land a farm truck is a must !
Bed liners are worth the investment, stops your cargo from slipping around.
    Congratulations 😁

    1. Thank you, yes we'll get some great use out of this. That's what I like about bed lines, keeping stuff kind of in place. Plus they just look good, ha. Thanks again!

    1. Yes, a blank slate (except those miles, ha). But yeah the outside is pretty simple and blank and we can figure out what all we want to do and put on it, ha.

  5. Nice to have when you got property~!~~ You know they may a spray on or roll on or brush on bed liner ... smooths out the rough spots, sharp spots etc and a lot less than the plastic "insert" type ... Enjoy!!

  6. Don't forget to reset your clocks tonight & spring forward and also check / change your smoke detector batteries as well. Most people forget about changing their smoke detectors in their home. We put new batteries in when we change our clocks and spring forward every year; spring forward, change batteries.

  7. Glad to learn about the pickup purchase but made even more glad because the buy means that your joint finances are recovered and in a healthy state. Roderick

    1. Well thank you for that. Though I wouldn't say recovered, this truck was purchased for less than a stimulus check, ha. We knew with those coming and this just sort of dropping into our lap, we had to do whatever we could to not let the deal slip through out hands. We're getting there but still a ways to go. :-)

  11. Nice! Hopefully, you put a few more scrapes and dings in it, showing you work with it. Did you keep both your other vehicles? I remember the times you had stuff for the farm in the back of your vehicle.

    1. Thanks much!! Oh it'll get plenty of those for sure. Well hopefully just in the back end. Oh yes we have both others. I need mine to get to work and 2nd Man needs his to get to work too. This will stay at the farm for when we need to haul stuff. We've thought about leaving it here for back and forth trips but that defeats the purpose of having it as a vehicle at the farm. If we need something that only it can carry, we'll just use it to drive and get what we need.

  12. We recently bought an old truck! My husband wanted it, and I kind of thought it was useless but...whatever. Anyway; it has been in constant use since we got it! I can't imagine life without it (well I can, but it's better WITH a truck!!). It has been so useful - such a workhorse! Really nice to have. You will enjoy yours, too!

    1. Ha, we understand. We've always had it in the back of our minds but just put it off and put it off. But when this deal came up, we said let's do it. Finally. And I have a feeling we're going to love having it. Thank you!!

  13. I grew up with pick ups, learned to drive on older ones, no power steering or brakes on my dad's farm. He always built those little side boards to extend the bed a little deeper. like the ones in your last picture. I think they dressed up the truck a little bit also. That is a nice looking truck.

    1. Oh my now THAT'S learning to drive! I've always loved old trucks with those boards. Such a cool thing and so recognizable as an "old farm truck", ha. thank you so much, stay tuned for adventures in it I guess, ha.

  15. I was right with my speculation that it was going to be a vehicle. Didn't think about it being a truck. Good for you and thanks to your customer for offering it to you.

    1. Yes you were! Thanks and yes, we are grateful that my customer (I'm in the insurance biz) asked if we wanted to buy a truck. We did not want to pass up that deal.
