Saturday was the first trip to the farm in almost three weekends. With nothing out there to really do, except water and perhaps mow, well, the rain took care of the last couple of weekends of watering and one of those was Thanksgiving and we just wanted to relax.
The plants all looked great. The banana leaves are a bit wind battered but that's what they do, ha. When we get them in the ground, there will always be wind. But everything was green and doing well. All we need to watch for is a freeze and if one is coming, I'll go out there and bring them back into town.
I did not have to mow, check this out...
This hasn't been mowed in weeks (this is from the barn, that sandy spot is where the house was, so weird to see every time we pull up). It's still green but with the cold weather and time of year, it's just not really growing. I will probably do it though next weekend, just to make sure it's as neat and tidy as possible before the first freeze hits and it stays at the length I leave it.
Speaking of watering, this was interesting...
These buckets that were sitting beside the barn were almost completely filled with rainwater. I thought that was kind of cool since I was able to water everything with them (15 gallons of water, ha). It made us realize how much rainwater reclamation will be important in the future. Something to research. We foresee a rain barrel or two or three in our future!
Lite posts this week with Christmas! Off work Tuesday and Wednesday but then back Thursday and Friday. We don't like Christmas in the middle of the week, ha!
Good idea to give the grass one more mow to make sure it’s tidy for winter.
ReplyDeleteCould you just put your plants in the barn during a freeze? Especially if you have a window in the barn.
I also have some 5 gallon buckets in my garden to catch rain. It’s nice to have it to hand water newly planted seedlings or to refill my water can. Plants love the micronutrients in rain water.
Reclaiming rain water is a good idea for many reasons. Get a pump or pumps to save wear and tear on your back. It all looks good right now.
ReplyDeleteWe had our old roof gutters replaced last year. With the new ones, I insisted the gutter guys accommodate my two existing rain barrels. Front and back. Those boys perfectly attached downward spouts to each barrel. We love it and it saves so much water!
ReplyDeleteWe have 3 - 100 black gallon tanks hooked up to our gutters.
ReplyDeleteYou would be surprised just how much rain gets collected after a nice shower of rain.
It's raining here now in fact.
Happy Christmas Eve.
Enjoy your evening and have a wonderful weekend.
