WOODEN RACKS TRASH TO TREASURE FIND

Regular readers know that I have a favorite place to look for bargains...our downstairs trash area!  Our building has trash chutes on every floor and they feed into a separate room, but for boxes and other things that people can't put in the chute, there is an area (indoor) near the loading dock, where people can put the things they don't want.

I've found several cool items so far.
Here is the latest!

Found these downstairs a couple weeks ago.  I'm not sure what they were, probably part of a shelving system of some sort.  When I saw them I immediately imagined them to be of use somehow, much to 2nd Man's chagrin, ha.

There are three and they don't hook together.  About 3' long and 12" deep and very sturdy.  I'm not sure I'd use one as a shelf though, items could be unstable.  I was kind of thinking of herb drying?  It would require some more attachments of some kind to hook them together or hang them but I think it might be worth it.

Any other suggestions?

  1. You definitely do not want to set heavy items like canning jars on them. Yes, I think they would be unstable, too. However, as towel racks, they would work with brackets. Or, you could use them to hang towels on to dry after laundry is done and instead of dryer or the hang clothes on hangers to dry. The possibilities are endless. Great score.

    1. Of for sure. They are sturdy but not sturdy enough I think to use like that. Towel rack is a good idea. We have a bathroom remodel coming at some point. Thanks for that idea.

  2. I think these are missing some parts cause they look like shelving racks that you would put in closet or mud room to put shoes on.
Will see if I can find you a picture.

    1. Here you go. This is what I was mentioning. They are many different varieties on this sort of thing but this was the 1st one I found.

    2. That was probably it! Great find! Thank you. They'll have a different purpose this time around, ha.

  3. A little bit of chain-by-the-yard & some S-hooks would link them in a tier of 3 shelves for drying clothes, extra shelving for folded clothes or sweater storage. Take them out to the garden as supports for climbing veggies - you could tie them & make a tee pee. Put grey bricks under them - I'd use 6 - and use them as plant stands. Make a garden seat & use them as the back & sides . . .

  4. Another cool find! I would probably stand at least one of them upright behind a mandevilla pot placed against a sunny wall for an incredible splash of color. Those suckers climb so fast and would be beautiful climbing those slats.

  5. SCORE! In addition to the other great suggestions you could hang them from an arbor with chains and then drape outdoor lights from them, running them through the rungs. Or table tops for platters when you've having a garden party.

  6. Great find! When I first saw them, I thought of your arbor idea from yesterday - they could be the roof.
Other uses: You could affix them with brackets to the wall for towel storage, extra blankets, quilts, craft supplies in boxes, laundry room supplies ....

    1. More great ideas. Thank you! I like the laundry/mudroom supplies. We do have the large wooden shelves out there already, these might be a nice 'extra'.

  7. The first thing that came to mind when I saw them was that they belonged to a hanging saucepan or laundry rack. The type that hangs over a kitchen island and has hooks that you hang pots and pans from. Or the type with a pulley arrangement to lower it down to hang laundry from and then pull it up again (similar to a Sheila Maid).

    1. Oh yeah! Never thought about that. It is like a pot rack. I wish we had room for that at the farm. 2nd Man already complains the kitchen is so small, ha.

  8. Herb drying is a great idea...or you can water proof them and make them into a trellis for plants that climb. They look like something from Ikea.

    1. They do don't they? Herb drying is where my mind went first. Bundles tied together, hanging upside down.

  9. All the ideas so far awesome! I like Donna's idea about the lights rack and I would put one of them in your party tree over your dinner table.

  11. We had shelves like that in the airing cupboard above the hot water tank. Towels and sheets were stored there. The slats allow warm air to circulate. The batons to support them were screwed into the walls.

    1. Cool, thanks for that. Great way to let air circulate around huh? And they could be screwed into the wall. Thanks!
