KETCHUP STORAGE FOOD DEBATE

It's time for the "Friday Food Debate" where we tackle some of the burning questions of the culinary world...LOL!

This week, the burning question is:

OK, this is a no-brainer for us.  We always keep ours in the fridge.  Growing up it was in the fridge.  But one day at a restaurant, we asked our waiter about the ketchup on the table and he said it stays out on the tables all the time.  We came home, did some Internet checking and sure enough, there is a debate about it.

Some people say they don't like cold ketchup on hot fries so it make sense to keep it in the pantry or a cabinet.  Apparently the general rule of thumb is to err on the side of caution and just keep it cold.  But there are many who still say it's no big deal to leave it out and just stick it in the cabinet.  Some say they leave their mustard out too!

So...where do you keep your ketchup?

  1. In the pantry. It says on the label that refrigeration is not needed.

  2. I follow label instructions and keep refrigerated. In the old days when most homes had a "cooler" ... a box with door from the inside that was exposed (via screen) to the cooler outside temps ... it lived there.... kind of a perfect solution ... now we buy the jumbo size bottles and keep refrigerated till all gone!!

  3. It stays in the pantry until it's opened and then it's stored in the fridge; same goes for mustard, relish, NNQ sauce, etc.; all goes in the fridge after it has been opened.

  4. Once opened in the fridge. I tend to put most condiments there once opened.

  5. it's the fridge for me but i suppose you could get away with it un-refrigerated BUT that depends on each persons cleanliness habits. i won't even touch a bottle of ketchup in a restaurant. they refill the bottles and use them over and over again. the bottles are never washed because it would ruin the label. some restaurants refill heinz bottles with cheap ketchup. gross!

I have worries about the refilled bottles of ketchup in restaurants ever since I saw a child licking the top of an open bottle. Yuck, I would have thought it was just clean!!!

  7. In the refrigerator. I always ask for little packs in restaurants because it is not sanitary is it is left out. I keep the mustard in the refrigerator, too.

  9. In the refrigerator. At the restaurant I worked at, half empty (glass) bottles were topped off with nearly empty bottles and the empties tossed. We had an apparatus for combining the bottles. Bottles were not reused so did not need to be washed. Ketchup doesn't have a long time to live in a busy restaurant.

  10. We keep ours in the pantry. I figure it's loaded with vinegar so there is no safety issue. So far we haven't had any problems and we've had the same bottle for at least a year! Saves fridge on real estate! :)

  11. In the refrigerator. I don't like little things growing in my ketchup.
