RUGBY BLOSSOMS RAIN AND A FREEZE

This was another odd weekend weather wise.  Saturday was nice and warm for a bit but then it got colder.  We had a rugby game to attend Saturday night and it was definitely chilly.

It was a good game, back and forth in scoring, tied at one point, and really close but in the end, we lost.

The Zen Machine is still getting it's annual maintenance so I couldn't mow even though I need to.  I got to the farm on Sunday and as it turns out, the weather was worse than Saturday.  Heavy clouds, colder and it looked like rain any moment.

As I walked around to check on things, look what I found!  Spring is coming!  This is the nectarine tree with a few blooms on it...

This is one of the apple trees...more blooms!

This is one of the plum trees, blooms coming soon...

And look at this!  An actual peach on the peach tree!  Spring is definitely coming but so is...

...a freeze!  A light freeze is forecast for midweek, the low will be 32 in the Houston area and the farm is supposed to get to about 31.  It's just for a couple of hours so no worries for anything like a hard freeze but I did have to get us prepped with the plants.

I put the box around the banana trees on the porch and covered the other sensitive plants.  I also covered the citrus with the frost cloth but it's not going to be subfreezing and won't last long enough to worry about heating the trees with the Christmas lights.  We are hoping this is the last one for this season.  All things considered, we have had a VERY mild Winter this year and we're OK with that.

Just about 5 minutes after I finished what I needed to do, I was sitting on the porch to relax for a bit and it started raining.  It was time to pack up and leave.

It was a good weekend, all things considered.

Now I just need the Zen Machine back.

  3. I love all these signs of Spring. Your blooms and the little peach are such pretty sights. My Meyer lemon trees are blooming and the scent is amazing.

This upcoming freeze is an aggravation. I’ll have to cover my key limes and avocado trees. My mature citrus should be fine with this light freeze. It’s predicted to be our last freeze, thankfully. I am ready to plant my vegetables, herbs, and flowers and 2 more fruit trees. I went to my local nursery on Saturday and bought a bunch. They are all sitting on the south side next to my house – I’ll just throw a couple of blankets on them for the freeze.

This year, I am planning on planting more flowers in my vegetable garden to attract more pollinators and also to deter some pests. And they’ll look pretty also. I was so happy to find some African blue basil. It grows to be about 2.5 feet and has beautiful blue flowers that the butterflies and other pollinators absolutely love.

    1. The citrus got really stunted in the only big freeze we had here. Not sure they are going to come back. Just keeping an eye on them. I know it's an aggravation isn't it? Ugh, but I have hope that this is it. no more this season!!

    1. I thought about that when I saw the blog title. They say not to use punctuation in titles on blogs because it causes some glitch with google search bots or something. It makes for some funny things for sure, ha.

  6. I do think that Spring is on it's way. My roses have started to bloom as well.
Nice to see that your fruit trees are blooming as well.

We are to get down to 29 deg. tonight; a high for today in the upper 40's and the wind is blowing like crazy. Wouldn't mind the cooler temperatures if that wind just wasn't blowing quite so hard.

  7. Hello again! I haven't caught with your blog for ages (moved house, sold and bought, new job, first grandchild etc). I spoke to you last year(?) about your cat/s with the Australian city names (I live near Brisbane). Do you still have your cat? Remind me, Brisbane or Hobart?
