SEEDS OF THE MONTH JANUARY

Seeds of the Month for January 2013

Got this month's batch of seeds from the Seeds of the Month club right on schedule.  It is a fun day when I get them in the mail after a long day at work.  It brings my mind back to the future and planning.  This month, at least I know what they all are as opposed to some past shipments.
For this time, they are:

Okra, "Burgundy"
Cucumber, "National Pickling"
Chives (no variety)
Celery, "Utah"

Anyone grown and used these particular varieties of each of these vegetables and herb?  I'm very familiar with okra, it's a staple down here in the South and I love it, but in this case, I can honestly say I've never had this purple variety.  As for the cucumbers, I'd love to have a good variety for pickling.

Thanks as always for any tips and suggestions!

  1. Of that little lot I have only ever tried cucumbers (with a zero success rate) and chives, which at least are nice and easy. For me okra is the stuff of the devil, so wouldn't do it - maybe it's the way I cook it :-)

    1. I love chives, I'm figuring I won't have too much trouble with that, ha. You made me laugh, "okra is the stuff of the devil"....lol. My Mom used to make the best fried okra, I loved it. Most people don't like the 'slimy' nature of boiled okra (I don't mind that so much either) but fried is wonderful and crunchy. It was sliced and coated with cornmeal and fried in a cast iron skillet Yum!!

  2. My chives have come back 3 years in a row, and I grow garlic chives too. I always grow Clemson okra, it's great for pickling (which I do mostly) nad also dries nicely for soups and stews.
Love the seed of the month thing....

    1. We love chives too. Glad to hear you like Okra too, we love it down here. I know it's not for everyone but it does make great pickles for sure.

  3. Hi 1st Man, I'm not sure where in TX your located, but I've had great success with National Pickling in the DFW area. They produce well in our zone and are a smaller variety perfect for pickling! Great job!!! I'll have to keep watching to "see how your garden grows". :)

    1. Hi there! We're in Houston and just West of Houston (the city house is in town, the farm is about 45 miles West. I'll have to make sure to put a spot in the garden for the National Pickling Cukes. Sounds good. Thank you!!!

  4. I have chives in my herb garden. They are a perennial so plant them where you want them to keep growing. They do spread so they can be easily divided and moved to other spots. They have lovely purple flowers in the spring time.
