COLD AND WET STILL

Sure the rain was gone today but...

...when we got to the farm in the morning, it was still wet...everywhere...

The pasture behind the garden was almost underwater, the driveway was soaked, and there was standing water under the house.  According to the rain gauge, we had a bit over 3" of rain at the farm.  That's a lot for just two days of rain.  Almost everywhere we stepped outside it was muddy and squishy.  It was also cold today, 40's and windy, so the windchill was even worse.

Needless to say, we stayed inside and did stuff.  I unpacked and found a home for some salt and pepper shakers I was given as a gift a couple of years ago.  I had lost track of them for a bit.  They are all animals we have seen at the farm.  A pig, an owl, a chicken, a cow and a fox....er, well, OK we haven't seen a fox, let's just say it's a coyote.

We stayed until almost sunset and then headed back into town.  We got things done that we had been putting off and I'll blog about those in upcoming posts.  Oh, and I unhooked all the hoses, drained them, and wrapped up the outside faucets.  Winter is coming here!

It was still a relaxing day, as it always is out there.

Here is the forecast for the next few days.  Freeze tonight...a bit of a warming trend Tuesday and then the bottom falls out again and it's 28 for a low and only 40's for a high.  Time to stay inside where it's warm.

The extended forecast for the weekend shows rain AGAIN.  Argh!  We're all for rain, but how about during the week instead of our weekends?

Hope you are warm where you are and had a good weekend.  Of course, those of you in other parts of the world where it is now Summer, well, should we send some cold your way?

  2. I hope fixing the water problem under the house is one of your projects. Even when the water is gone, it's damp under there. Maybe a French swale that you could install yourself.

It quit raining, actually drizzling, about 4 am, and at 4 pm, The thick St. Augustine grass is still squishy, like walking on a sponge. Your weather comes here anyway, so no thanks. Keep it.

Oh yeah, the wind finally picked up here.

At least the days are getting longer.

    1. Yep...the main reason is no gutters. When we get the roof changed, we're getting gutters as well. That should happen in the next couple of months, hopefully before the heavy Spring rains we can get.

Isn't the wind a pain? It makes things feel much worse.

  3. 1st Man,

It's great when the rain comes but not all at once. A nice slow drizzle.....during the week preferred!!!
As for the cold, I think we have you beat 17 degrees. I can ship you some cold if you would like :-)

    Stay warm, and dry!

    1. Exactly, a drizzling rain is nice and pleasant. No cold, I'm cold enough. Bless your heart I just don't know how I'd handle that cold. Stay warm yourself!

  4. Sounds like you certainly got the winter preps done! I love the Battenburg lace curtains by the way. My old neighbor who is like a grandmother to me had those up in all her windows. I love the cool simplicity!

    1. Good eye! Thanks, yep, Battenberg, I couldn't remember the name until you said it. We have that one in the kitchen window and one in the bathroom window (they are smaller than all the others). They are so simple yet pretty. The only thing that I don't like is that it doesn't let you see out much. For the bathroom that's ok, for the one over the sink, we kind of like having aa clear view.

  5. Please, PLEASE, send us some cool weather. It feels like we haven't had proper sleep for days and the day temps. are through the roof and the night ones not much better. Wouldn't be too bad if it was a dry heat but it's so humid one would be forgiven for thinking we were in the tropics not down the far south coast of NSW. Oh well, the garden is loving it. Veges and fruit in spades!

    1. That's still so wild to imagine our season all reversed like that. I suppose if you've grown up that way it's normal for you huh? Just like for us, we know Summer is hot, Winter is cold. I'm glad Christmas comes in cold weather, it seems right what with Santa and snow, ha. Well then stay cool!! I'll try to send some cold but I'm guessing it will fizzle out somewhere over the ocean, ha.

  6. Not cold just a little cool!
I echo what Fiona has said.

I was born in the U.K. & it took me quite a while to get used to a hot Christmas. I still miss my hot turkey but have had to get used to salads!

    1. I bet that is a change to have to get used to. Christmas just seems it should be cold huh? Ha.

  8. I LOVE your Farm salt and pepper shakers! They look so cute on your kitchen window sill. I have the same kind of lace in my curtains but they are a cut-away style so I can see outside - I have a pull-down shade behind them for night.
Wow, 3 inches of rain - you got more than me. At least the ground water is getting replenished.
It was sooo cold and blustery yesterday when I was covering up my freeze-prone plants - I’m just leaving them covered for the upcoming freeze in a couple of days. How many days until Spring?!

    1. It rained a LOT at the farm. Wasn't it cold and windy? That makes me just want to stay inside as much as the rain does.

Aren't the shakers cute? Got them as a set, and they add a splash of color in the window.
