One of our favorite trees at the farm is the Huisache tree. There area few on our property and the bees seem to love them too.
It is also known as the Sweet Acacia.

They only bloom at this time of year and have these brilliant yellow flowers. These are at the front of our property.

They really stand out in the landscaping. Above is an area I've been clearing, a couple acres away from the house. We have visions, someday, of a large gathering area for parties, dinners in this spot. Of course, the Huisache stands out in a blaze of yellow amongst the green.
Here is that same tree up close. In a few weeks, it will be green like the rest but in the short term, we get to enjoy it's beauty. And if you think it's just yellow leaves or flowers, you have to see them up close..

They are puffballs of yellow. Oh, and did I mention the scent is intoxicating? We can smell it on the wind while sitting on the porch. The scent just wraps around you like a familiar friend. Many ranchers consider it a weed or trash tree and do all they can to eradicate it. We'd love to have more scattered around. It's a great tree to have on the property.
Sadly, it has thorns, just like its cousin the Mesquite...but even the beauty of a rose is first guarded by its thorns...

What beautiful trees, thorns and all, haha. We have nothing like that here. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThey do have the thorns but like you said, just so pretty. At least until the flowers drop off, then it's just a green tree, ha.
DeleteBeeutiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteLovely trees but I'm also struck by the beauty of the landscape where you will plan for your parties. What a backdrop!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I need to find some old photos of 'before'. It was truly unworkable but I just got in there and started working. We kind of thought of it as a game area, maybe volleyball or badminton, or giant chess/checkers, etc. Time will tell. Now I just have to keep it mowed, ha.
DeleteWhat pretty trees! We don't have those here, but if we did I would plant one just to see it in the spring.
ReplyDeleteIt's very pretty. And not so bad the rest of the year, other than the thorns, ha.
Deletethose are gorgeous trees and so good for your bees!
ReplyDeleteThe bees love them for sure! Not sure what kind of honey that will make but we'll see, ha.
DeleteThey look like they are related to our wattle. Also with golden (usually) puffball flowers and a heady scent. Gorgeous things.
ReplyDeleteI just looked online and they are!!! These are an acacia and so is the wattle. Too cool!!
DeleteBeautiful pops of gold in the landscape! I read that it is beneficial to wildlife - animals eat its' fruit, birds use it for nesting and cover, and insects eat the nectar.
ReplyDeleteI love your future party/dinner area.
Yep, and there is always something hanging around it. Thanks, not sure what this area will become but I keep it mowed and it's a wide open space just waiting for something to happen, ha.
DeleteGreat POP of color to your landscape, even if it's for a short time. Great tree for all sorts of wild life; large and small.

Thanks for that link, some great info there. :-)
DeleteYour post about huisache 2(?) years ago made me realize that was what 'those' trees were beside the road. So later on I stopped and collected seeds and now have small trees growing. No blooms yet, but they probably need to be taller than 2 feet! So thank you for your blog! It's definitely making my life better!
ReplyDeleteAww, that's sweet! Thanks for that! Heck, you inspired me to pick up some seed pods and plant some on purpose! They are scattered around the property but I'd like some along the fenceline.
DeleteThey are a very pretty tree but our Acacia Wattle trees here in Australia are soooooo bad for sinus or hay fever sufferers. Enjoy them from a afar.
ReplyDeleteI'n not sure about these, they are related of course but I'm not sure cause neither of us has experienced that. Might be good to think about when we have people over in the future at that time of year.
