During our unusually harsh Winter, I forgot to flip the birdbath over, it filled with water in the rain and then in our 15 degree weather...
...it broke. And not in several large pieces where it could be glued together. No, it had to be many small pieces. I haven't thrown it away yet though, much to 2nd Man's dismay.
Maybe a future art project?
And speaking of, any suggestions for this part of it? This is the base of the birdbath and it just seems too pretty to throw out.
Any thoughts?
Use as a plant stand.
ReplyDeleteclay pot or plastic with some pretty flowers or a succulent, cactus or a plant that will fill the pot and trail down.
All depends are where you will be placing it; sun or shade to determine what to plant.
could also put a saucer on top and use as a birdbath or birdfeeder stand
DeleteUsing up the broken pieces;
Deleteget a large clay saucer; using the broken pieces make or have someone do it for you and make into a mosaic piece and place on top of your stand.
Use4s the pieces and make coasters from them, make a pretty stepping stone to place in your flower bed
Many projects that you can use up them broken up pieces
Thank you for these ideas. I like the idea of a stepping stone, as sort of a momento of what once was, ha. Coasters are cool too.
DeleteIn your large community, there must be a potter artist who could make a new top.
ReplyDeleteYou know that's a good point. Thanks for that!!!
DeleteWhat a shame! You might be able to use the pieces as a mosaic for a new bath bowl. You would have to play around with them to see how to make it work. It might never be as beautiful as the original but it would be very interesting and a decent alternative.
ReplyDeleteThanks, great suggestion there too. I'm sure 2nd Man was like "really? you're keeping the pieces? For what?" ha. I'l have to show him it was for a good reason.
DeleteUse it as a plant stand
ReplyDeleteput a sundial on it
put a pole in it with direction signs to bees, cows, etc
glue a small top to it to sit a drink on it
place a small bowl of succulents on it
put a pot of cascading flowers on it
Put a sign on it for the driveway near the road
Lash it to mailbox and put flowers there.
use it for the thing that measure rainfall
You can place it far from the house as a surprise during a walk of the acreage.
The reason for lashing it to mailbox is that it will be knocked over. If there is a hole in the bottom of the stand, then you can drive a stake and place the stand over it. I assume there is a hole in the bottom of the stand or it would have filled with water and frozen, too. If it will go over whatever the mailbox sits on, you can just put it over that stake and adorn the mailbox with the stand.
For the broken bowl, look up how to make a tabletop or benchtop of broken pottery. Put the rest of the bowl in a box and cover with bag or use safety goggles, take a hammer and break it into smaller pieces. Then, follow directions and glue it to a top for a table and put grout on it. Maybe the top could go back onto the stand. or not.
Have you brought home anything that could benefit from a broken pottery top?
WOW! You have a great list!!! I like them all. I like the idea of a small table. A sign post pole is great too. And the rain gauge. Dang, great suggestions there Parsimony!!! Thank you so much!
DeleteOurs broke and I was able to buy a new top only - I would choose yellow which would really pop on that base - another one that broke years ago- I just put a pot of flowers on it and it looked great. - we have a lot of animals around at night and they seem to always knock over birdbaths - just birdbaths. Love your blog - Mary Ellen
ReplyDeleteHi Mary Ellen! Welcome! Thanks for the kind words. You know, that's a great idea too, just find a solid color that brings out a color on the base. I have so many idea now, ha. Thank you!
DeleteScoot it under the porch and you'll find the perfect place for it. I edged a flower bed with broken blue and white dishes and just love it.
ReplyDeleteOh I bet that's so pretty! And you know, that's a great idea, just scoot it out of sight and we don't have to worry right away. I like how you think!
DeleteThe very same happened to me! Aaarghghg.
ReplyDeleteDon't you hate that? We did so much to prepare for the freeze, TOTALLY forgot about that. Could have just turned it upside down and things would have been fine. Oh well, we'll make lemonade from our lemon, ha
DeleteI had many of the same ideas as others have said. One more would be to attach a tray to the top and use it on the porch as a small stand for a pitcher of lemonade after a day of yard work!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea. We even have a tray that might work. I'll have to look at that. Thanks!!!
DeleteYou can always create a new bowl out of the broken pieces; find a few more dishes and break them and make a new thing. It'll be lovely. <3
ReplyDeleteMake something new out of something old, that's always a nice thing to do. Thank you Alison!! :-)
