Are you sitting down?
Let me preface this by saying that this coming Wednesday, Babygirl had an appointment at the Vet clinic for a spaying at 8am.
This picture was taken on Labor Day evening. In fact, this picture was going to be today's picture. Does anything look different about her? She looks normal right? Maybe gained a little weight and maybe we overfed her a bit but she looked healthy. Went out to feed her Friday morning and this greeted us:
Here they are.
Five little kittens. Four of them look healthy and have fat little tummies. One (actually, #1 in this pic) is a bit weaker and had some blood around his mouth when we brought them in. We think she might have started giving birth on the rocking chair or table and this one might have fallen off. Then she moved to the corner behind a pillow on the porch floor and had them there.
At first, we put them all on the screened in porch. She went crazy being inside and decided that the screens might be an easy way out. We stopped that right away (no damage, thank goodness) and moved the family inside. We set up a cardboard box and some towels. She fed them and we tried keeping her inside but she is not meant to be inside right now. She will stay and feed them and clean them and then starts running around wanting out in a panic. Per the vet, we don't want her to get so stressed that she abandons them or stops producing milk entirely. We decided the best move is to let her in and out: she goes out on the porch and sleeps on the chair or table and stays outside...
It was off to Tractor Supply (love that store now) on my lunch break to get some supplies.
We got a can of KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer) and two bottle sets (one for each of us to use). We figured the full set with cleaning brush and different nipples was better to have around instead of just a bottle, in case some other baby animals make their appearance out here someday, ha.
We also bought a jumbo plastic litter pan (to keep them contained, for now anyway, ha) and some pee pad liners and extra blankets and towels.
Congratulations! You both are Baby Girl’s guardian angels!
ReplyDeleteOMG ... what a wonderful surprise! No, Babygirl did not look like she had 5 babies in there! Looks like she is a good Momma and you two gentlemen are taking on the role of Fur Daddies so sweetly! ❤️
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes time to get Babygirl in for the spaying ... just get her in the carrier and get to the Vet! She will not hold it against you!
There's nothing sweeter than a litter of kittens. Galestorm in NC
ReplyDeleteHow convenient to have the kittens before spaying. I wonder how many litters she has had? Cute though.
ReplyDeleteWell! Surprise!
ReplyDeleteShe did pick a good family to welcome her babies.
Been out of town and missing your blog but tuned in today and yay for you guys. My Mom had a cat that was sitting on my lap one day before she gave birth and I had NO idea she was pregnant. Neither did my mamma. I guess it's just biology. I think you can get her spayed about 4 weeks in. If you all are supplementing them with formula it would be ok if she's out of commission for a few days. Can't wait to see those babies grow up and hope you find wonderful homes for them all. Luv Janie V
ReplyDeleteWhat a Surprise! You're right, she didn't look pregnant. Thankfully she had the kittens safely on the porch and not outside under a bush. They are sooo cute! And they have two wonderful humans to help Mom take care of them and love them.
ReplyDeleteNow that is what I call a happy, precious unexpected surprise. The babies are adorable.
ReplyDeleteNow, TSC usually has a bulletin board in hallway going to the restrooms ( they do have one up here).
It's for people to put up a notice; if they have item or animal for sale, puppy and / or cats to giveaway, lost animal, ETC. Putting up a picture with poster is nice to go with. Make sure you talk to management first before posting your notice.
Have a blessed day.
She did not look pregnant at all. What a surprise!! I'm so glad she felt comfortable enough to have them on your porch instead of somewhere else. They are all adorable.
ReplyDeletebetween being without regular meals most likely, and since she's so young, I'm betting this might be her 1st litter. what I am surprised about is that she had 5 kittens for being so...not-pregnant looking. Suprise!
ReplyDeleteWe had a little gray/tan tortie girl show up at out house about 2 months ago. She's gone from gulping food in a panic and running away if she saw me. to demanding I pet her. She does have a tipped ear, so I'm hoping she really is spayed.
