SINK SHELF

Shelf for mudroom sink
Remember a few weeks ago when I put up the shelves above the mudroom sink?  Click HERE for that posting.  Anyway, I bought a set of 4 shelves from Ikea but only used three of them above it.  I was trying to think of what to do with the extra one when I temporarily laid it across the sink.

Turns out it fits nicely and gives a sort of extra horizontal space to sit things on,  for example, a basket to strain and rinse veggies in.  Even with the faucet running, the stream of water runs out passed the shelf when it's pushed to the back.  I am thinking about actually getting another one so I can just make the top an extra table surface for the mudroom when needed.  They can easily store at the side of or underneath the sink.  A coating of some water proof deck type stain might be good as well, just so no worries with being wet.

I love it when something unexpected comes out of something else.

  1. Very clever :)

Suggest you seal it so that any water which splashes on it won't warp it.

Take it from me, that mudroom sink is invaluable :)

    1. I know it will be. We haven't used it much yet, but this whole process is planning for the future and I knew that a big sink like this would be needed someday. So far it's great for just walking in the back door and washing up after mowing or being outside.

  2. May want to research what would be best for this application. I'm not sure I'd use deck stain or sealer on something I may have my raw veggies on before consuming. I don't have any suggestions but I'm sure there is something safe you'll feel good about using.

  4. Use tung oil, Bioshield or PolyWhey to seal it

  5. ok - if you don't stop bragging about that sink, i am quitting this blog - NO - i mean it mister!!! and no more pics of it either!

other than that, spar varnish would be good for your sink shelf. spar varnish is what they use on boats. just be sure that if you are placing food right on the shelf to use a plate or whatnot. but the spar varnish will last for the rest of your life and will completely protect the wood.

NOW ENOUGH PICS OF THAT AWESOME SINK! DEAL?

    your friend,

    1. What if I put a warning? "Look away now, avert your eyes", LOL!

I haven't decided if I want to put food on it (like future veggie resting spot) or just use it like a resting spot for things like the strainer basket that will never let food come into contact.

Decisions decisions. I guess I'll have to let you know in print, without pictures, HA!
