Here is a picture that shows something we've always wanted as an entrance to our property. Now first of all, we share a driveway for the initial part of the driveway with 2nd Family. From the road to where our property begins is theirs, so we can't ask them to plant and do stuff on their part but from our part forward, I know we can create something nice.
Below is where our portion starts. I mow this every week and have gradually widened it. I figure it needs trees, after all, a tree lined driveway is always a sight to see. Of course, this year I worked on getting the fruit trees in before it got too hot. But I think this Fall will be a good time to plant some trees along here and let them start growing so that SOMEDAY, they look like above. We'd also like a fence like above that frames each side of where you drive in, so we can do that as well (and have a post already there, ha).
Be Inspired!
Trees are so cheap right now at Houston Garden Center in Katy. 70% off.
ReplyDeleteWow, 70?% off? Thank you for the heads up. I could get them and keep them in town where I can water them daily and wait until Fall when it's good to plant. Thanks!!
Delete1st Man,
ReplyDeleteI love the inspiration driveway and fence with trees. So this is your ultimate goal?
Thanks and yes, I think of it as a sort of curb appeal. I've always wanted a driveway that looks like a country road. I like our entrance because it's so much better than our city concrete driveway, ha, but it's just a tad bit boring. I want the height of trees. I figure I better plant soon so that someday, it might just look like that, ha.
DeleteDo you want dome free trees? I have tons of tulip poplar saplings. They grow up nice and straight (used for telephone poles) and grow fairly fast. Let me know and I'll start potting some up for you to send you in the fall.
ReplyDeleteWow! You are so awesome! Do you know if they'll grow here? Let me see if they grow well in our tropical rainforest like climate, ha. Thanks!
DeleteI think a drive with tire tracks is the most beautiful drive there is. Ours is gravel and gets dusty and washes away during gulley washers. PS ~ I lived in Bellaire for 11 years and the same thing happened there as it did in the Heights. Though I do miss Houston sometimes, I don't miss the traffic. Farm life is better, though it is hard to not have restaurants and shopping and I miss The Chronicle and Post.
ReplyDeleteThanks! And yes, I know Bellaire well! Fortunately my new job (as of a year ago) is about 4 miles from the Heights and is in Midtown so traffic is now a thing of the past for me anyway, ha. But someday we'll have that farm life. For now though it's a great stress reliever. :-)
DeleteUsed to love The Post, sadly it's gone, we only have the Chronicle.
Oh, I forgot, trees and shrubs do much better when planted in the fall.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I wondered and I thought I had heard/read that once. Now I have confirmation, thank you!
DeleteTree-lined drives are lovely, I agree! My one suggestion in that you make it much wider than you really think you want it to be, to allow for diameter growth of the trunks, and also to reduce the impact of vehicle weight on the fine roots of the trees for their lifetimes. Plus, a wide drive is just elegant! Looking forward to seeing what you plant :)
ReplyDeleteGREAT suggestion. I didn't think about that. It's very wide now, but you are right, I need to anticipate future needs and future growth. Thank you!
DeleteAre you going to try for a circle driveway also?
ReplyDeleteNo, not enough room for that, I mean, there are acres but the way the fence lines and the large old trees and front of the house work, that would be a luxury I couldn't make room for. But it IS kind of nice to just park wherever and then just back up where and drive off, LOL!
DeleteSounds splendid. And, I am in agreement with Quinn to make it wider than you think because what if you have to have a very large construction vehicle come into the property and they are unable to get thru because the roadway is too narrow and there are just too many trees to deal with. The trees would probably be torn up and all would be for naught!
ReplyDeleteYes, a construction vehicle or two could be in our future. Great idea. Thank you!
DeleteHopefully this time next year you can see your vision of your tee lined driveway in place.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! Albeit, perhaps a bit on the small side, LOL!
DeleteLol true but you have to start somewhere!
Deletethat would look great on your property! look for trees on sale from now to fall. i bought maples and oaks for 1.25 6 years ago and planted them and they are as big as the ones in the photo already!
ReplyDelete$1.25???!!! Holy cow, great deal. Yes, I will definitely check them out. DinDin above suggested a local garden center that has 70% off. I will check that out. Thanks!!
DeleteWhat no SOUTHFORK GATES.?
ReplyDeleteHa, that would be Texas for sure! I'll see what we come up with someday. ;-)
