This is an old music box that's been in my family for years.
Not even sure of its history but my Mom loved it and it was always around the house somewhere.
Not even sure of its history but my Mom loved it and it was always around the house somewhere.
It's brass around the outside, very detailed, and top has an insert of lace and embroidered flowers.
When you open it, it's lined with purple velvet (mom had some of her favorite mementos inside, I left them in there of course).
The bottom is wood, so I'm pretty sure this is very old. We just can't recognize the musical tune.
Any thoughts on the box and/or tune?
The box looks early 1900s to me but I have no idea as to the tune.
ReplyDeleteWow, early 1900s? I don't think it's been in the family that long, my Mom said she remembers her Mom buying it somewhere, perhaps from a friend in the small town they lived in. My Mom was born in 1945 so I guess it was floating around long before that.
Delete1st Man,
ReplyDeleteA beautiful jewelry music box. It's old, and maybe worth some money.
I wish I could help you identify the name of the song and the year of the box.
Thanks, yeah, it's definitely unusual and very pretty.
Deletei never heard that tune before. nice box though!
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of haunting isn't it? Thanks!!
DeleteThat's a mystery song. How nice that you have so many mementoes from your mom. Were you an only child?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, I was an only child. My Mom, Dad and me. :-)
DeleteNo orange play button here.
ReplyDeleteDang, sometimes I think it depends on the computer, sort of like "Java" and "flash". On my mobile phone it works but i had to refresh a couple of times.
Deleteit's a very beautiful box! but all i get is white noise when i play the song??? not sure why???
ReplyDeleteyour friend,
kymber
Thanks!! It's SO pretty. Yeah, the software for soundcloud doesn't always play on all systems. Dang it.
Deleteits sounds German,, my grand parents were German and had something similar,, its a treasure,, sorry I don't know he name o the tune, it did work beautifuly for me, its lovely,
ReplyDeleteOh wow, thanks for that tidbit. Thank you, isn't the tune pretty?
DeleteI thought it sounded either German or Austrian, kind of like a lullaby or folk tune, but no idea really. Just guessing
ReplyDeleteThank you!! Every little bit might help.
DeleteMe see no orange button.
ReplyDeleteShame on you for showing this lovely box. :} I collect music boxes and have over 300.
Not being able to listen to the tune, I['m going to throw out a few titles here. Most older music boxes played 'Memories' ; 'Serenade Romance'; or maybe 'Dr. Zhivago'; 'Yellow Bird'; 'The Happy Wanderer,'; 'Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head. The ones that I have listed are tunes from just a few of my boxes.
I would check with an Antique Dealer in your area and they may be able to give you more information about it and maybe give you what music it plays.
Keep us informed if you find out anything. Curious mind here would like to know. :}
Here are some links that have many tunes fort you to listen and just maybe you will find out what your music box plays.

DeleteGah, I hate that I recognised the tune but but can't think of the song title... it's an unusual tune that I recall my Granny whistling. I'll do my best to remember the name of the song.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's neat too. An old tune for sure. Keep me posted!!!
DeleteI was expecting to hear Greensleeves because that was very popular for music boxes. Not Greensleeves nor Blue Danube and I have listened to a hundred others. When you find the song, please let me know. I hear music boxes even now!
ReplyDeleteThere is something magical about them isn't there? And do people even have music boxes now? Seems like a lost thing, or becoming one anyway.
DeleteNo orange play button, so can't help you with the song. The music box is really lovely - what a wonderful “memory box” of your mom.
ReplyDeleteDang, sorry. Yes, it was one I had to keep for sure.
DeleteWhat a charming little tune...sounds german or swiss perhaps?? No idea what it is.
ReplyDeleteThanks, charming is a great way to describe it!
DeleteAll we (think we) know is it's something in 3/4 time, possibly has slowed down over time. Was lovely item to see- and hear- tho, thanks for letting us play along! G'luck!
ReplyDelete3/4 time? You know your music, that's beyond me, ha. I wondered if it had slowed down. Thanks for the input!!
Deletewish I knew the title of the song. It sounds German to me
ReplyDeleteAwesome, another vote for German, now I hope we can find out. Thank you!!
DeleteI love it. The tune is rather simple and sweet, so I wonder if it was a children's song or just a song written to soothe children. I had a music box in The Hurricane's bedroom when she was little. I'd wind it up at night when she was fussy. If she was still fussy when the song finished, I knew she needed something more. I'd return to her room to burp her or change her position a bit.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
What an awesome story to share, thanks! It's funny you said that, I thought the same thing about the tune, it seemed very "sweet" to me...like a children's lullaby type tune. Thanks!!
