I often post about the thrift store deals I find, but occasionally, I find some food deals too! I was in our local Kroger grocery store the other day and noticed a "discontinued" sign on a shelf of bacon.
But these weren't on a clearance special because of expiration date...I asked the meat guy why they were on sale and he said they were an item the store was discontinuing. So I bought a few...FOURTEEN packages to be exact, LOL!
They were only $1.99 each, down from $5.99.
Their loss is our gain!
Oscar Mayer Uncured Bacon |
The brand is Oscar Mayer "Selects"...a smoked and UNCURED bacon. No nitrates or nitrites, which is the main reason we were so excited. Those all natural/nitrite free packages of bacon nowadays are expensive. There is even a warning that because it is not preserved, it must be kept below 40F at all times.
Each package is vacuum sealed making them perfect for tossing in the freezer.
Fried bacon |
We fried up one package (purely in the interest of research of course!) in the good old cast iron skillet and oh my, it was SO good. Such a different, fresher taste than cured bacon. I can only imagine what true fresh bacon must be like but hey, at this price, it's a pretty good runner-up.
You are so taunting us with bacon. As a kid though I hated it as I couldn't stand the smell of it cooking (or popcorn for some reason - though I always liked to eat it). Coffee is the opposite. I love the smell but can't stand to drink it. Though don't be fooled by the no nitrates thing. Celery is used as a natural nitrate source. So it really is cured. Just with celery.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I'm the same way with coffee. I LOVE the smell of it, but have no interest in drinking it. Bacon though, have always loved and always will, ha. Great point about celery, I didn't even noticed the celery juice. That's fascinating, at least it's a 'natural' curing, ha.
DeleteWow, what a deal! And no added nitrates. You are a Bloodhound for bargains! Now you have a great supply for all those fantastic meals that 2nd Man makes.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I seek them out or they find me, ha. Yes, we're going to have bacon for awhile. Yum!!!
DeleteI love to see anyone get really great deals! Like you I have a boatload of bacon in my freezer because of very similar circumstances. Nothin' says lovin' like bacon.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it one of the most perfect foods? I love hearing about others deals too. Thanks!!
DeleteRMan is drooling at the sight of that crispy bacon...
ReplyDeleteYay! Wouldn't it be awesome if the internet allowed for smell? I could make bacon smell come out of your computer, ha. Of course, I guess that would be mean since I still couldn't share, so maybe not a good idea. Tell RMan it was good! ;-)
Deletei love finding deals like that! especially when i am cooking for the masses!
ReplyDeleteAren't you always cooking for the masses? Ha. I don't know how you do it but you are pretty amazing with it. But yes, I'm sure you need some good deals for those mass quantities.
DeleteOne of my favorite foods. Don't go look at the handmade Whole Foods bacon. In different flavors, each slice is about 1/2" thick.
ReplyDeleteWhaaaaat? Um, yeah! Ha. Bacon goes with everything doesn't it?
DeleteI love bacon and tonight thats whats I am having a good old bacon and mushroom sandwich with brown sauce, that is a good bargain you have there :-)
ReplyDeleteBacon and mushroom sandwich? With brown sauce? I've never heard of that but now I'm off to google it, it sounds yummy!!!
DeleteIts just fried bacon fried mushrooms on crusty buttered bread and the brown sauce is HP dont think you have HP sauce over there :-)
Deletethat was a great buy!!!
ReplyDeleteI just can't pass up a deal, decorative OR edible, ha! Thanks!
DeleteThat was a steal!
ReplyDeleteIt was a pretty good price, and pretty close TO a steal, ha.
DeleteWow, that was a great buy. I buy the uncured when I buy it too. I'm surprised that they would discontinue the Oscar Mayer brand. The large local supermarket here discontinues items all the time and it seems to be only the brands I buy that they discontinue! That bacon sure does look good! I could eat the whole plate and I'm trying to go vegetarian! LOL! Maybe I'll have just one cheat day every now and then!
ReplyDeleteWe always try to get the uncured when we can (it's harder to find than a lot of people might realize). I was surprised too, it's not like an off brand or a newcomer brand...I bet it's just the higher price than "regular" bacon and so many people still don't know about nitrites and nitrates. Go ahead, have a cheat, we won't tell. :-)
DeleteTHAT should be illegal! in fact, i think it is illegal. and i have no problem reporting you to the authorities! i know that we are friends...but illegal is illegal. that is all i have to say!
ReplyDeletebahahahhaah! what a great deal! i mean steal! we are sooooo jealous! and sending much love! your friend,
kymber
Do I sense a big of bacon envy? LOL! Hey, I'll cut yo in on the deal if you won't rat us out. ;-)
DeleteAlways sending much love to you and Jam from both of us!
American bacon has a look all of its own.......
ReplyDeleteWe dont do crispy bacon here... Just fatty
That's fascinating! Is it a different kind of bacon (like cut or something?) or is it just what everyone grows up with? Hey I'll eat it pretty much any way.
DeleteSoooo jealous! Love bacon.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
I rarely find deals like that but I sure raised eyebrows at the checkout counter, ha.
DeleteBACON. BACON. BACON. Yep, I said it. Bacon is perfect food. You scored with that one!
ReplyDeleteBrad J

ReplyDeleteI' not sure what happened to your comment. I read it and liked it! Write again! :-)
DeleteWhat a bargain!! When the bacon is on sale here, I buy an extra pound and dice it up, then cook for bacon bits that I keep in the freezer in small quantities. Then I have them ready to go for salads, pastas, etc. No precooking needed. Oh, and all the leftover bacon grease, so good with fried eggs and potatoes. Mmm... good! Have a great week. M
ReplyDeleteOoh! That's a great idea! I like that. Oh and yes, we absolutely have some bacon grease in the fridge ready and waiting. :-) SO good...
DeleteThanks, you too!
Just read this great article on freezing bacon by rolling up the pieces. I think it's genius! http://www.thekitchn.com/heres-another-easy-way-to-freeze-bacon-222182?utm_source=at&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=xpost
ReplyDeleteSuzan
Now THAT is pure genius! Thanks for sharing that. I will try that with a few packages so we have a combination of both. Thanks again!
