THIS IS FOR THE BIRDS

Ha, thought that would be a fun post title.

We have decided to help the wildlife now that we are out there and part of that ecosystem are the birds.

So, the other day, 2nd Man said, "get some bird seed at lunch!".  I found this "Texas Blend Wild Bird Seed", formulated for our state's wild birds.

Of course, we have no bird feeder.  We do have a fabulous barn replica birdhouse that a very sweet friend gave us, but we don't want to put that up just yet.  We'll do that in the Spring.  We also have some great Texas bird books also gifted to us but they are still in storage, will have to get those out soon.

In the meantime, we do have some Shepherd's Hooks that we brought from the last house, and I had plans to put windchimes on them, but we'll use one for this.

As I went down the "bird aisle" at the store, wow, all sorts of fun stuff.  We will get other kinds of feeders in time for the coming Spring.  We'd love for our property to be bird habitat.  Sitting on the screened in porch listening to birds sounds like a winning situation.

  1. You will be surprised how fast the birds come once they find a feeder. Also put out a bird bath. I do not have outside outlet for power so I change the water every 1 hour when it is cold. But make sure you take in the feeder at nighttime as critters will come in and tear it down no matter what you hang it on. Take it from me we have acres and lots of experience with this.

  2. Scatter some on the ground so birds know where to look. Do you have bears? when bears are out of hibernation we have to take feeders down.

  3. During the cold, winter months get some no melt bird suet cakes. The suet provides fat content for the birds which they need during the wintery months. We get our bird seed at Tractor Supply.
If you have squirrels, you my want to get a squirrel feeder as well, but hang that far away from your bird feeders or you will end up having the squirrels eating all the bird seed.

Put out some sort of water source as well. We just have shallow, plastic container bottoms cause the birds do enjoy taking a bath every now and then. We also have an electric bird water that we ordered off the internet a few years ago.

This is what we had bought some years ago and still using it. Instead of it sitting directly on the ground; hubby just used a section from an old pallet and used it as a base for the birdbath to sit on. Many different ones on the market now since we bought ours.
I must say, the birds do like taking a bath every now and then.
You are so going to enjoy watching the birds at the feeders and taking their baths.

Going to have another cold blast of winter moving through starting Friday and through the weekend.

Everyone stay safe and do stay warm.

  4. I have found the least expensive bird seed at Costco and/or Tractor Supply. Be aware that there will be a lot of debris from the feeder on the ground. Squirrels and ground feeder birds will eat most of the fallen seed. The rest will mostly become mulch but some will end up sprouting. Try not to put the feeder too close to the house because the birds sometimes fly into, as in smack, the windows especially if pursued by hawks.

We got a bird book that lists them by color which is helpful. Enjoy,

  5. I've gotten the Merlin bird app that it's by song and it's great! Sight id has always been tricky with distance and moving. Now I'm id-ing familiar but unknown calls- sandhill cranes! Crested kingbird! Lots of butter butts!

  6. You’re going to love watching and listening to the birds. I buy bird feed with sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, peanuts, raisins, and dried cherries. That appeals to a lot of birds. I also put out whole peanuts because the blue jays love them so much.
For water, I have several bird baths around the yard.
