CANTALOUPE IN THE SUMMER

So, a few weeks back, I posted about yummy and delicious watermelon.
Now we are getting into yummy and delicious cantaloupe...we have had three in the last week alone (hey, we like to eat, at least it's healthy...unlike the doughnuts we had later, don't judge!  LOL!)

Sliced cantaloupe
Beautiful orange flesh, with that green edge on the rind all around the outside...

Fresh cantaloupe
It's just so refreshing on a hot day with its dense texture and sweet and distinctive flavor.  There was even a cantaloupe ice-cream here in Texas every Summer from Blue Bell but I haven't seen it back yet this year so we bought some vanilla ice cream and I made my own.

Just a very satisfying fruit and a great (and healthy) dessert.

What about you?  Big cantaloupe fans?
Any favorite way to eat it?

  1. I have never had any cantaloupe ice cream but I have made some pretty tasty cantaloupe sorbet.
My favorite way to eat it is in slices with a sprinkle of black pepper and a dash of dried hot red pepper.

    1. Sorbet would be wonderful. I'll have to remember that. And I've never tried pepper but I will!

  3. My mother loved cantaloupe! I must be allergic to it because I cannot stand it. However, I buy it all the time for exbf when he is here. I made smoothies for him with it in the summer since he cannot stand bananas. Aren't we the pair?! (frozen strawberries, blueberries, oj, yogurt, and either banana or cantaloupe)

Mama would eat cantaloupe with cottage cheese. When I was an adult, she tried to entice me to have some, "just one bite."

I buy them when they are $0.98/each, give the seeds and rind to chicken and slice and cube the rest for him in a gallon bag to carry home after he eats some here. He is in heaven.

  6. This time of year at my MaMaw's table there were always cantaloupe slivers on the breakfast table and tomato slices on the dinner table. Mmmmm Mine are just starting to ripen too.

  7. Oh yuuummm, my favourite way to eat it is scoop out seeds and fill hole with plain yogurt, if ot fragrantly tasty add a little honey.
When on the farm we would smell check them in the afternoon when nearly ripe, the stronger the scent the riper they are, often we would decide to pick the next day as they were almost perfect. ...the farm cats would agree and eat holes in them overnight !

  10. Cantaloupe makes me happy! Actually, any melon does on a hot day. It's true that they have a cooling effect just by eating them.

I wanted to tell you that those canning lids are Tattler reusable canning lids. I just love them. They come with lids and rubber rings (which eventually have to be replaced but can be bought separately), and only require small adjustments in technique. Highly recommended.

    1. They DO don't they? Thanks for the info about the lids. I will research that. Good for the ones we use ourselves and save the others for giveaways, right? Thank you for this!!

  11. That looks so good. Little salt and pepper on mine.
When our daughters where young, I would make them Jell-O Melon (or sometimes called jello filled melon. You take a melon, cut in half, scoop out the seeds, cutting a small section on the bottom of each half so it sets level.
In bowl, mix your favorite flavor of jello with 1 1/2 cups Hot water, stir until dissolved; whisking for about 2 minutes and add 1 cup ice cold water.
Place the jello in the refrigerator for about 15 - 20 minutes or just until it starts to thicken (you don't want it to gel up) but yet thick it enough so it doesn't soak into the melon.
Pour jello into melon, place in refrigerator until it gels up.
Note: You might want to place the melon halves in cake pan placed in the refrigerator first before filling and then using a measuring cup to fill the melon and leave till jello has set up.
When ready to eat, slice with sharp and slightly wet knife.

  12. We've spent many summers in Rome and the best way to eat cantaloupe is cut into slices/chunks w/the best quality prosciutto you can buy. It's a common appetizer in Italy. Pop a piece of melon, then a rolled up slice of prosciutto, together.....heaven. I don't know if its the contrast of flavors or textures, but once you've had it this way, you'll be ruined forever. No cheap prosciutto though!! Get the imported, expensive brand, you only need a little and it's so worth it.
