I have made this a couple of times and we love it. I found the recipe online at Delish.com. We've changed it slightly but it's basically the same.
Chili cheese hotdogs in crescent roll dough casserole |
Ingredients:
2 15 oz cans of chili (we like Wolf brand)
8 hot dogs (Nathan's)
1 can of refrigerated crescent roll dough (Pillsbury)
2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
2 TBSP butter, melted
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried parsley flakes
See steps below:
Chili in casserole dish |
Pour the two cans of chili into the bottom of a 9x13 casserole dish and spread out evenly.
Unroll the crescent rolls. They are perforated into triangles. Pinch those perforations together to seal. Then you have just cut into 8 equal squares (more or less equal, they don't have to be perfect). Spread a bit of cheese on each one (you'll use a total of about 1 cup of the cheese).
Lay a hot dog along one edge...

Then just roll them all up and press the seam together, like big pigs in big blankets...
Nestle them into the chili seam side down, lined up in a row...
Melt the butter, mix with the garlic powder and spread on top of the crescents.
Sprinkle with parsley...
Cheese dog casserole with chili |
Put the rest of the cheese that you didn't use (should be about a cup, give or take) on the top of it all. Pop it in the oven and bake it, uncovered, at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Some people cover with foil for a bit if they have trouble with it browning too fast. We were fine in our oven with it being uncovered.

You want the crescent roll dough to be brown and cooked, so it might take a few minutes more. Just keep an eye on it. I think this cooked about 37 minutes total because we wanted the cheese to get good and bubbly.

Dish it up and serve. The crescent rolls make a nice enclosed cheese hot dog "bun" and it's a great combination of flavors. One time when I made it I sprinkled diced onion over the top as well. It's truly a chili cheese dog in a pan.
Enjoy!
Oh Yum. Looks delicious; just like having a nice chili cheese hot dog on a bun; messy and cheesy :} Bring on the napkins . . . lot of them in fact. :}
ReplyDeleteWhat! No sliced Jalapeno peppers sprinkled on top. :}
BallPark franks for me tho
Thanks, it was messy and it did take lots of napkins, ha. We have trouble finding ballpark franks on occasion and Nathan's are a good second choice. :-)
DeleteWanted to mention that you can substitute a tube of the Pillsbury refrigerated classic pizza crust in place of the crescent tube of which I have substituted one for the other before in other recipes.
ReplyDeleteOoh great idea, thanks!!!
DeleteI love love LOVE chili dogs with lots of cheese!
ReplyDeleteAren't they good? And yep, no such thing as too much cheese, ha.
DeleteI am so making this! Yum!
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy. It's pretty forgiving you can change it up as you'd like.
DeleteThat looks so delicious! My stomach would hate me and make me pay for days if I eat a hot dog though! I could probably substitute that for fresh sausage! It's such a good comfort meal! :)
ReplyDeleteI understand. But wow, sausage would be good!!! Will have to try that. Thanks!
DeleteDang I wish I had seen this before last night. We traditionally have hot dogs for dinner every Halloween. I absolutely would have mede this instead.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tradition. Well I hope you have it sometime (maybe you won't have to wait a year ha).
DeleteI was thinking no way with buns, but I bet they are good with crescent rolls. Good quick dish. I have a recipe like that too. Empty a large can of tamales, peel paper off, cover with chili and cheese and bake. Good for a quick meal. But yours looks better.
ReplyDeleteYes when I first saw the recipe online I thought the same thing, but yep the crescent rolls really change it up and believe it or not, it's not "quite" as heavy. Like the idea of the tamales, quick and easy!! Thanks!
Delete1st Man,
ReplyDeleteOne dish meals got love it!
One dish meals are THE BEST. Easy set up and easy cleanup, ha.

DeleteGoing out in right field here; But, just wanted to Congratulate the Astro's on their 1st World Series WIN. They can now finally call themselves champions.
ReplyDeleteWhat a game and what a great world series ever.
You look like you were up almost as late as we were! We could hear horns honking and people yelling (happy yells, ha) until about 3am before we finally fell asleep! Thanks and congrats to the champion Astros!!
DeleteActually I was just getting up as you where heading to bed. (I'm an early riser )
DeleteYum, this looks delicious! Another winner!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Maybe not the most diet conscious dish, but delicious nonetheless!!
DeleteMade yesterday (Tuesday) and was Delicious.
ReplyDeleteI used 1 can chili and also added some sauteed onions and sprinkled on top before topping with chili
