CHILI CHEESE DOG CASSEROLE RECIPE

I have made this a couple of times and we love it.  I found the recipe online at Delish.com. We've changed it slightly but it's basically the same.

Chili cheese hotdogs in crescent roll dough casserole
Ingredients:

2 15 oz cans of chili (we like Wolf brand)
8 hot dogs (Nathan's)
1 can of refrigerated crescent roll dough (Pillsbury)
2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
2 TBSP butter, melted
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried parsley flakes

See steps below:

Chili in casserole dish
Pour the two cans of chili into the bottom of a 9x13 casserole dish and spread out evenly.

Unroll the crescent rolls.  They are perforated into triangles. Pinch those perforations together to seal.  Then you have just cut into 8 equal squares (more or less equal, they don't have to be perfect).  Spread a bit of cheese on each one (you'll use a total of about 1 cup of the cheese).
Lay a hot dog along one edge...

Then just roll them all up and press the seam together, like big pigs in big blankets...

Nestle them into the chili seam side down, lined up in a row...

Melt the butter, mix with the garlic powder and spread on top of the crescents.
Sprinkle with parsley...

Put the rest of the cheese that you didn't use (should be about a cup, give or take) on the top of it all.  Pop it in the oven and bake it, uncovered, at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Some people cover with foil for a bit if they have trouble with it browning too fast.  We were fine in our oven with it being uncovered.

You want the crescent roll dough to be brown and cooked, so it might take a few minutes more.   Just keep an eye on it.  I think this cooked about 37 minutes total because we wanted the cheese to get good and bubbly.

Dish it up and serve.  The crescent rolls make a nice enclosed cheese hot dog "bun" and it's a great combination of flavors.  One time when I made it I sprinkled diced onion over the top as well.  It's truly a chili cheese dog in a pan.

Enjoy!

  1. Oh Yum. Looks delicious; just like having a nice chili cheese hot dog on a bun; messy and cheesy :} Bring on the napkins . . . lot of them in fact. :}

    What! No sliced Jalapeno peppers sprinkled on top. :}
    BallPark franks for me tho

    1. Thanks, it was messy and it did take lots of napkins, ha. We have trouble finding ballpark franks on occasion and Nathan's are a good second choice. :-)

  2. Wanted to mention that you can substitute a tube of the Pillsbury refrigerated classic pizza crust in place of the crescent tube of which I have substituted one for the other before in other recipes.

  5. That looks so delicious! My stomach would hate me and make me pay for days if I eat a hot dog though! I could probably substitute that for fresh sausage! It's such a good comfort meal! :)

  7. I was thinking no way with buns, but I bet they are good with crescent rolls. Good quick dish. I have a recipe like that too. Empty a large can of tamales, peel paper off, cover with chili and cheese and bake. Good for a quick meal. But yours looks better.

    1. Yes when I first saw the recipe online I thought the same thing, but yep the crescent rolls really change it up and believe it or not, it's not "quite" as heavy. Like the idea of the tamales, quick and easy!! Thanks!
