THRIFT STORE FINDS

On this Friday the 13th, I thought I'd share a couple of finds.  Went to a thrift store at lunch and found this vintage metal rooster mold...

It doesn't have a hanger on it but we'll figure out a way to hang it on the wall.  We tried a nail and balancing it but that didn't work, LOL.  Not sure we can ever use it but regardless, it's a fun decorative item.

And then this...it's definitely old, the fabric is a bit yellowed and has a water stain or two.  I believe these were (are?) called samplers?  It will have to be framed or somehow mounted for display, but when I saw it, I just had to get it for us.

We'll find a spot for both of them somewhere at the farm, that's for sure!

It's Friday!*

*the thirteenth, are you superstitious?

  1. I love the rooster cookie cutter. Glue a string across the back and use the string to hang it. Use a glue that is not brittle, but stays softish. The cross stitch is great.

  2. I think a soak in Oxy Clean, or laundry detergent with Oxy Clean in it will whiten your sampler but not do any damage ... I use it in every load of clothes ... does a good job on whites and colors ... and never any damage to our stuff ...

  4. If and when you frame that cross-stitch sampler, use acid-free baking as well as non-glare acrylic (don't want to use regular framing glass) and hang it where the direct sunlight doesn't hit it as the colors will fade if hit by direct light.

  6. More great finds! I love that metal rooster mold. It’s perfect for the Farm, especially since you’ll be having chickens someday. You could glue a round picture hanger to it for hanging.
The handmade cross-stitch is beautiful. Think of the time and talent it took to make it!
This might be helpful for cleaning it: http://www.thefarmchicks.com/farmchicks/2015/08/quiltsaver.html

  7. Oh, it is a mold not a cookie cutter. lol. NO! I am not the least bit suspicious under any circumstance.

  8. Yes, that is a sampler. Little girls used to learn their first stitches by making samplers. No sewing machine, of course. I made a sampler once. I think my ex-husband kept it, so he probably threw it out. Easy come; easy go. Perhaps this question is silly, but what does one mold with a rooster mold?

    1. One might mold a horrible meat and egg and vegetable aspic in a rooster mold! Yuck!
Aspics, so popular in the 1950's.

  9. Great sampler. I never did one of those in cross stitch days. I intended to, but there were so many dragons!
I've made Friday the 13th my lucky day and 13 my lucky number, but I think that makes me superstitious :-)
