HOMEMADE SNOW AND ICE

Well, even though we had a burst pipe, there is some beauty to be seen.  2nd Family has one of those septic tank aeration sprinkler systems.  You can see our barn and shed in the background of this picture.

It created its own snow.  We didn't have any rain or anything, this is just from that system.

It's amazing how water and freezing temperatures can create such amazing things.  Now, it's not always nice to look at of course, but in moderation, it's pretty.

This one is so cool.  Much like the process of candle making, where a wick gets dunked over and over while it builds up laters of wax, so do these grasses with ice building up on them until it creates this.

It's like an art installation, ha!

  1. that is about what our yard looked like when our septic sprinklers went off during the freezing temperature.
Pretty to look at for a short time but wouldn't want to see it all winter long.

  2. It is pretty. But.
I well remember burst pipes each winter. They are not fun.

  3. Never heard of a septic tank having sprinklers on it... In Florida if there's going to be a freeze, the strawberry farmers will run sprinklers. As long as it doesn't get too cold for too long, the ice covering the plants will protect the berries. Sounds a little crazy, but it works.

    1. The sprinklers have to be turned on at about 30 or 31. After the berries and plants freeze the temp. does not go any colder than 32 when the ice is on the plants. Strawberries are just coming on in central Florida. We will have a Strawberry Festival in Feb. or March. Oranges freeze solid and are used for juice if picked soon after the freeze. Some orange grooves run a drip system on the bottom of the citrus trees to keep the roots from freezing and can save the trees sometimes.

    1. 2 sprinkler lines are connected to the septic system and when pressure builds up in the septic tank the sprinklers come on to release the pressure.
We have ours set on a timer for them to come on early morning hours.
There is just me and my husband, so our sprinklers don't come on, only once every morning early. The more people in the family the more the sprinklers will come on.
