At the end of this post, a surprise outdoor picture!
We were at the farm, well, there and a mall and back to the farm, ALL day Saturday. The low voltage install guys were there doing all the stuff the tech side of things. They had come out a few months ago, before drywall, and put in all the wiring for alarm, wi-fi, internet, some exterior cameras, and the in-ceiling speakers.
We stayed for a while to answer questions about various things and options and then we went to a mall to roam around while they did their thing (no place to sit, 2nd Man said we should bring some lawn chairs, ha). We ended up leaving after dark.
The back porch had two ceiling speaker connections, and they put those in for us. They are connected to a sound system in the a bedroom, and we can push music from our phones, playlists, podcasts, stereo, whatever. It's SO awesome to have music outside. I can be watering the fruit trees and hear music. We only put speakers in the living room and the porch. If we need music in the bedrooms or bathroom, we will use an Alexa device. The living room speakers will eventually be used mainly for the surround sound of the TV. We'll have two in the ceiling behind where we will sit and a sound bar under the TV.
See the other little box on the wall? That is an outdoor wi-fi access point (WAP). We have one on the back porch, one on the front of the house and three inside the house. It allows the signal to reach everywhere without slowing down so 2nd Man can work from home (and me when needed) wherever we are in the house. It also makes sure the signal is strong no matter where you are (sometimes a house can have dead zones or drop zones where you don't get a good signal and then if multiple people are using it at the same time it's slow). The outdoor ones have a theoretical range of a quarter mile. This means I can have internet access outside in the barn or shed, I can have wireless trail cams that connect to our network, a weather station (DEFINITELY getting that at some point soon), anything that might be gardening related, etc. It should be fun to figure out. We are sort of future proofing things as tech changes.

" Hope you like it as much as we do!" Nope; don't like it one little bit. . . I absolutely Love it. It is Gorgeous. Red, black & white are my favorite colors.
ReplyDeleteWait till grass starts growing around the house area and maybe a few flower beds as well. Do you have; or will have a landscaper coming out to give you ideas on what to plant and best location for trees, shrubs, etc.?
Right now; I cannot wait for the final reveal with furniture in, & decorated along with anything else that you both have been holding back on
Awww, thanks!! You'll make us blush. No landscaper, at least we don't think so. I 'm going to figure out myself, we shall see, ha. We already have ideas for decorating, getting some new furniture for the living room but most everything else we transfer over. Plus all the prior farmhouse stuff we have in storage. There will plenty of posts coming for those! :-)
DeleteI am anxious to see you two on that beautiful porch in your rocking chair. I want to hear you say let us go have dinner or watch tv. Just to know you are living there and putting little touches on the house to make it your home. I am so proud to see you all getting your dream house, you deserve this after so much planning and dreaming. Love the whole house and thankful I found your blog and feel like I made two new friends.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! It's coming soon and we are so grateful. Some hurdles here and there but we made it through. Didn't even let a pandemic stop our plans, ha. Thank you and you are always welcome in our house!
DeleteThat is a gorgeous front porch. I'm so excited for you both.
ReplyDeleteThanks, it really even looks better in person that when we saw it on paper, ha.
DeleteWe have Starlink at our property and we love it (not so fond of Elon at the moment but I can separate that from the company). It was the only real choice in our area. We've had snow on it, hail, rain, it always keeps going. And that porch is AMAZING. It's so big! I can see some ferns hanging (do they grow down there? maybe not) but something nice hanging will look beautiful! Congrats! Mikie
ReplyDeleteThat's good to know. It's our only real choice as well and many in the are have it and love it. Ferns will grow here if not in direct sun, we'll have to see how they work for us. Maybe with us there I can keep up with them and keep them growing. I'll have to search out some pretty hanging plants. Thank you!
DeleteThe tech stuff is fun and a necessary thing, especially when you're rural, but that porch has me in love. The white is so pretty with the red and it's all very elegant. Do I see an outlet in the soffit? What a great idea, lights I presume?
ReplyDeleteYep, we are in love with the porch too, ha. Yes, an outlet!! You are very observant. We have one on each side of the house, for just that reason, lights or anything else we might want to put up there.
DeleteWith starlink you are radiating your neighbors up to 8 miles away. Hope they are not radiation sensitive. There are lots of people out there like that. And the buzzing that comes from starlink satellites is another problem.
ReplyDeleteWe totally get the concerns, we've seen those RF radiation fears online too, what with 5G and everything. But from what we've read, the Starlink dish beams signals straight up to the satellites, so the exposure to neighbors is super low, way under safety limits (like Wi-Fi routers, but even less sideways). It drops off so fast that 8 miles away, it's basically nothing. No solid studies show health risks for people nearby and in fact, saw one study I read showed microwave ovens put out several times more radiation (though still safe). As for satellite buzzing, the only thing I could find was the radio noise astronomers complain about, because it can mess with telescopes but isn't audible or harmful down here since we can't hear radio waves. The dish itself says it will hum a bit if it's heating up in winter to melt snow/ice. Everyone out there who has it raves about it and when you're rural, you need reliability to be able to work and earn a living. If we can get fiber at some point in the future, we'll do that for sure but for now, this is our best option. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteThe little shutters!❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteHa, thanks, they are wonderful. Wished they were functional but hey, they look cute right?
DeleteAll I can say every post is wow, and this porch is a WOW! It's beautiful just empty, if that makes sense. Love love love!
ReplyDeleteHow kind of you, thank you!! It really does look good as it is, ha. Can't wait to start doing something to it.
DeleteY’all thought of everything for your dream home! It’s going to make living in it wonderful. I’m so happy for you.
ReplyDeleteI love the blue ceiling on the back porch. The front porch is gorgeous. Variegated airplane/spider plants would look good there and they’re pretty hardy.
So many great memories to be made in your beautiful new home.
Thanks so much!! The blue really came out nicely. It's subtle but there, if that makes sense. I didn't think about spider plants! Those are hardy for us. Thanks for the reminder! (though I might still try some ferns, I just so love the look of them, ha)
DeleteAnother easy-care plant for hanging baskets is Swedish Ivy. And it’s very easy to propagate - just snap off a bit of it and let it root.
DeleteOh thanks, I'll have to look that up!!
DeleteSuch an inviting entry point!
ReplyDeleteThank you, we really like the way it looks. When it's got some character with plants and chairs and such it will be even more inviting, hopefully!
