RAISED BED GARDEN UPDATE

Here are two of the garden beds.  They have survived their first week with the automated watering system, yay!  We only had yesterday with rain since last weekend and this is what they looked like.  Still doing well.

4x4 raised bed herbs
The one above is the herb bed of course.  We just planted a few of the basic herbs we use most often.  We have the rosemary on the porch, and then I have marjoram and sage in town that I need to get in the ground next weekend.  Future seasons will expand our herbs to more culinary varieties and hopefully medicinal, tea and others.

4x4 raised pepper and eggplant bed
This is another of the 4x4 beds.  We decided to go for three eggplants (the two Ichiban we've grown before, in town, and they did very well) since we enjoy them,  then we're trying the Orient Express variety.  Next, we added the TAM jalapeƱo, and lastly a poblano pepper, which we love to cook with.

We have a 4x8 bed and another 4x4 bed (those are the last two currently irrigated beds) that we have plants in, more on that in another update this weekend when I get the pictures.

Fingers crossed that they all continue on their journey!

    1. Aren't they wonderful? They grow so well down here. In fact, one Summer (at the small garden bed here in town) they were growing so fast we were gathering them every day. Be warm!!!

  2. Wow, I can just smell the herbs!!! Can't wait to see the pics when they all fill out. :) The temp is dropping to 32 tonight in the DFW area. Hope the cold front doesn't head your way. Have a great day guys!!!

    1. I know, I always hate when you first plant stuff and it looks so empty and you want to just fill in with more, but need to remember they'll fill in on their own, ha.

We saw on the weather about North TX getting a freeze. I'm so glad we aren't having that here but it is in the upper 30's tonight. Records are falling!

      Thanks as always dear lady!!

  3. That all looks great. I am not an eggplant fan, I am glad you are an eggplant fan so I don't have to eat any. Can you control your watering system from town?

    1. I know some people don't like them. Maybe you just haven't had the right recipe, LOL!

Oh how I'd love to control it from town. Not sure if there is a way to do that but 2nd Man knows his way around a computer, i might have to suggest that, ha. That would be so awesome. With a camera too, then we'd be able to look and press a button ha. You might be onto something. If you can turn on lights remotely, why not a water faucet.

  4. 1st Man,

You did a great job on installing your water drip system. Will you be placing mulch over the top and around every plant? Gotta love using those timers :-)

    1. The timers are great, though I'm going to worry about it constantly, ha. Yes, definitely mulch over the top and around the plants. Speaking of, it will be delivered soon (for the whole garden area too).

  5. Hi, I love your blog. I've been reading for 6-10 months. I don't recall when I started. I love best-your blog isn't another DYI painting blog. Oh, I read those too. But your blog is peaceful to me. I don't feel a pressure to get out there and make a couch out of Popsicle sticks!
One question/ request. Can you think about adding many more articles about your home? I'm dieing to see just the outside and would love love to see the inside. I've never seen the home at all! Is this a personal choice?

    1. Well....you win the award for sweetest comment, ha. (sorry no prize, LOL). Seroulsy though, you are just very kind and I don't know what else to say. You comment about the couch made of popsicle sticks cracked us up. Hey, just wait, it's coming, NOT! Ha.

YES! You are very right, it's time to take some photos. There are many scattered around the blog posts, but it's been awhile and we have lots of new visitors and friends and it would be easier to just take some new ones. Nothing at all about keeping them out on purpose, just haven't focused on that lately but it's time. :-)

Now the outside, not much to see, it's the last major project to do. New roof needed, painting, possibly new porch railings, etc. But definitely will get some inside pics soon.

Thank you again for the kind words, they mean so much to us.

  6. Very nice! You did well planting the eggplant and peppers together, as they are excellent companion plants. You can also plant marigolds in with the eggplant and peppers to deter nematodes. You can always tuck a tomato plant in there as well. I am so happy to see you finally have the beginnings of your farm garden!

  7. I've yet to develop a taste for eggplant...I think they are beautiful and fun to grow...just don't care for the texture...Thank goodness my two daughters love them!
