OUR FIRST TOMATO

We interrupt this "Inspiration Thursday" for some breaking news...

WHAT IS THAT PEEKING OUT?

THE RED COLOR?

Why it's our first tomato!

He's not the prettiest...

He's not the biggest...

He certainly won't win the blue ribbon at a state fair...

He won't even make the cover of Gardening Monthly...

But when we covered him with a bit of special salt...

He was the BEST tomato in the world...

  1. :} Looks like that tomato is growing a ....................Nose.
Always the best when grown ourselves. Fresh is the best tasting.
You got your first tomato and I got my first bell pepper today.
My Roma's aren't near ripe yet but the plants are well loaded with em.
    Enjoy that first bite and no fighting over the tomato either between you and 2nd man. Share and share alike :}

    1. OH MY GOSH, you're right it has a bit of an "unfinished face" look, I didn't see that. Well he was delicious, ha. I'm going to try bell peppers next year (or maybe our second fall season?)

  2. The first glimpse of red is exciting. And, the first tomato is beautiful, no matter what it looks like. Congratulations.

  3. And a Roma at that. My favorite fruit of the home garden. If you pick it when it starts to turn, it will finish ripening on the counter. Commercial growers call them vine ripened when it starts to turn. FYI. So in the fall before an eminent freeze or an insect invasion, it will be fine to pick once it turns.

    1. Yep the Roma's were producing first. I need to see if I can plant another batch for our second growing season (we are blessed with a later summer season when it doesn't get cold until late november.

  5. Home grown is blissful - and tomatoes particularly so. Why oh why do we settle for the tasteless things sold in the shops?

    1. It is so true, there is absolutely NO comparison.

  6. There simply is no comparison, home grown is awesome. Putting them in the fridge will make them tough and floury textured, part of the reason shop bought are so different. ...ina bad way.
Even the smell of home grown will have your mouth watering,

    1. Yep, we always keep them out of the fridge. Some people don't realize that I think. At least those without gardens, ha. And the smell is so distinct and delicious.
