TODAY WAS A WASHOUT BUT SPICES ABOUND

Today was a washout.  Not monsoon rains, but rain on and off all day.  We skipped the farm and stayed in town to run some errands.  2nd Man was going to get his haircut, but we drove by and they weren't open when it was already two hours past their opening time.  We called and someone answered and seemed to not know what was going on.  Next.

Then we headed to a fun place to roam around, the restaurant supply store.  Picture above is not today, it's from a previous visit.  I would have gotten soaked standing across the street taking this picture, ha.  It's a great way to spend a rainy hour or two looking at all things cooking and food.  We picked up a few things.

Lastly, we went to Penzeys to replenish our herbs, spices and seasonings.  We love Penzeys and are lucky to have a store here in Houston and so happy they survived the pandemic business slowdown.  We've been shopping there since opening day years ago and usually visit about once every six months.  We keep a running list of what we run out of and then on the day we go, we check the pantry to see what's running low.

It's also a good time to try some new items.  Today, our new try items were "French Four Spice", "Bangkok Blend", "English Prime Rib Seasoning" and "Bavarian Style Seasoning" which is currently on a pork loin in the fridge getting ready for tomorrow.

We called it a day, early dinner, a nap, and some reading and TV rounded out the day.

Hope you all have had a good weekend so far!

  1. I had no idea Penzey's had a store. The Restaurant Supply would be fun, too. I have been meaning to go to one here. Maybe this is a good reminder.

    1. It's been here for about 10 years or so. It's a great store. We love it. And they have one large jar for every single spice/herb/blend that you can open and smell. It's so much fun (that part of shut down for a couple years, obviously) but it's back now. That and a restaurant supply store are just great places to go day dream about food and cooking.

  2. We have a store for olive oil. They let you taste anyone that you want to try. A little in a small cup and a piece of bread. It is wonderful to see about 100 or 125 different flavors, different countries and just unusual blends. The people that run it are so nice and keep saying try this one. I do love going there..

    1. Wow, that's cool. Not sure we have anything like that here. We've heard olive oils are kind of like wines, so much variety depending on the olive, the region, etc.

  3. Though I hate shopping I can browse through Penzey's for a long time. Bangkok Blend is one of my favorites.

    1. Right? It's so fun. It's a store where you can literally look at every single thing in the store. Love it. Can't wait to try the new ones.

    1. It's the best. We're so fortunate. I think they have stores in 24 states. But in Texas for example, there are two. One in Houston and one in Dallas.

  5. Two fun places. The restaurant supply store sounds like a good place to browse around and find great kitchen things.
I love Penzey’s. You’re so lucky to have an actual store to visit. I have to order though the mail. They have wonderful spices and other cooking/baking goodies. I love their Soup bases – I use it in soups, casseroles, when cooking rice, making gravy, etc.

    1. Of all the places in Texas and they only have two, we're so happy it's here near us. Even when we're out at the farm, we'll have to drive in from time to time and stock up, ha. We'll have to try their soup bases, not sure we've done those. And the restaurant supply is where we have gotten so many things like our wonderful baking sheets (heavy duty/commercial grade and so much less expensive), stainless utensils like spatulas and tongs and spoons, etc.
