We've been keeping our eye out for the three more fruit trees that we need to finish the orchard area. Well, we're going to have citrus at some point but we'll need an "orangery" or greenhouse for those and that will come later. For now, we need to fill the three empty raised beds and replace another that didn't make it.
We filled one of the three a few months ago with a Mayhaw tree.
Our plans for the other two spots are a pomegranate and a fig. We also need a replacement peach for the one that didn't make it last year.
I stopped at a couple of garden centers/nurseries on the way out the other day and there were no fig trees and the peach trees were not the best looking.

But I did find the other one we wanted.
Here is a "wonderful" pomegranate (that's the actual variety, not our description, ha) that I found. It's both drought tolerant and can handle freezes into the teens. That should work for our climate. It will go in one of the outer beds since it grows in bush form and we'll put the fig in the other outer bed since it will grow in bush form as well. Hope to find those this weekend.

Nice looking Pomegranate tree. It's really leafed out nicely but it may go into shock once planted and may loose some leaves.
ReplyDeleteRemember, once you plant it water well and don't forget to mix up some Root Stimulator. when it comes time for you to plant your veggie plants or any plant; add the Root Stimulator as it gives the roots that extra boost for growing.
Can't find what you are wanting at the nursery; ask to see if they can place an order for you or see when they will be getting any other citrus trees in. I have found that it never hurts to ask.
Yep, we've got some really good root siimulator that we used for the others. They do like the boost. Stay tuned on the additional trees, some good news, ha.

ReplyDeleteWe've never had Mayhaw jelly but we've hear so much about how good it is and that the trees grow well in our climate so that was why we chose it. Hoping to get the chance to try our hand at making Mayhaw jelly. Fingers crossed.

ReplyDeleteFor figs, you might try some nurseries in more rural areas around your Farm. My local nursery has them - the Brown Turkey variety which are good for fresh eating and make delicious jam.
Stay tuned for info on the trees (hint, found them, ha). Excited about the potential for these.
DeleteJust remember Figs will draw bees who make holes in the fruit and set up shop there... and lemons have very sharp thorns. Things we didn't know when we moved here!!
ReplyDeleteOh definitely know about the thorns. Of course 80% of the trees on our property are mesquite and covered in thorns so we're used to that, ha. Bees I didn't know about. We had some figs a few years back and didn't have the problem then but maybe it's the variety. We'll for sure keep an eye on that. Thanks!! And stay away from those thorns!
