CAST ACRYLIC TUBES TRASH TO TREASURE

Regular readers know that I have a favorite place to look for bargains...our downstairs trash area!  Our building has trash chutes on every floor and they feed into a separate room, but for boxes and other things that people can't put in the chute, there is an area (indoor) near the loading dock where people can put the things they don't want.  I've found quite a few cool items over the last few years.

Here's one of the latest:

Saw these in the recycle bin.  At first I thought they were glass but they are actually lucite or acrylic.  One is 24 inches and the other is 12 inches high (long?)...

...and 8 inches in diameter and 1/4 inch thick.

They are clear and perfect, no scratches or breaks or cracks.  Of course we aren't sure what they were used for.  It actually looks like they were once together as a longer tube and then maybe cut.  I put them up and out of the way in the barn/shop.

2nd Man said "what are you going to do with those?"

"Um, I don't know yet don't pressure me" ha!

They seem like they could be some sort of fun future project.  Set them over the top of a planter?
Put on a bottom of some sort and make a terrarium?
A lamp with LED (no heat) bulb?
Seal it up as an aquarium for small fish?
A bottom and a lid and make a cool see through cookie jar?  Or do the same thing and use for storage of something?

  1. Those tubes are normally called hurricane tubes that you would use to put over top of tall candles. They can be used to put over tall candle sticks or the big round candles. Very pretty set up and decorated for any holiday or for a nice romantic evening.

  2. Pillar candles is what I was trying to think of on the 'big' round candles

    1. Not the flamed candles, but the tall, battery operated pillar candles

    2. That's a good use, I thought of electric candles when you said that. Yeah, flames would not work, ha. I don't think these are the official ones because you can see where they've been cut plus they are super heavy and thick. Today I was thinking of some led fairy lights in them.

    3. I have battery candles throughout the house, as they are great if your power should happen to go out, which it does every once-in-awhile. Saves from having to walk around the house using a flash light.

  3. You could put it on an appropriate plate and fill with Christmas balls and fairy lights. Do it for ever holiday with different items and fairy lights. For a permanent display put shells in it or a treasure of your own, like a doll or clown or another item.

    1. I was thinking of that today at work (daydreaming, ha). I like the idea of a permanent display of something. Good idea too!

  4. Maybe hot glue them to a wooden base for stability and use for displaying all kinds of dry items.
You certainly don't want to be burning a candle in an acrylic tube ... maybe one of those LED flicker candles ... no flame involved!!!

    1. Oh that's perfect, a round wooden base a little larger and then hot glue. It would be a perfect for a display. Those flicker candles are so awesome. LED lights have come such a long way.

  5. Have you heard from The Weaver of the Grass, she has not posted for over a week. Her birthday is Oct. 31, and she will be 91, I think.

    1. No, I was wondering as well. It's not like her to go this long without posting. I didn't realize she is 91, wow. I reached out to a couple other blog friends to see if someone can find out.

    1. Yes, she does, noticed that she's not commenting on several blogs. Hoping just a computer issue.

  7. The first thing that I thought of was a bird feeder. Use two pie pans, one for the top, another for the bottom. Use spacers for the bottom tray so that the feed will pour out the bottom into the lower pie pan.

  8. I like Parsimony's Christmas decoration idea. Those would look very pretty with small decorations and some lights in and around them.

    1. I always figure as long as it doesn't take up much room and we have a spot to put it, why not? We'll eventually find just the right project.
