I had to cut a renegade branch on the tomato vine down near the bottom and there were some green tomatoes on it...
Green tomatoes |
Not that we could have done much with these three little guys, but it made us wonder, what CAN be done (if anything) with green tomatoes?
Of course we know there are the ubiquitous "Fried Green Tomatoes" (have eaten them but never made them) but we were just wondering if anyone had any other uses for green tomatoes?
Or anyone ever grown a tomato plant JUST for using its green tomatoes?
i had a friend that used to make a green tomato pie but i never tried it. i love fried green tomatoes!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds wonderful, I'll have to google some recipes. And yes, fried green toms are SO good!
DeletePut them in a paper bag and they will ripen. As for green tomatoes I have made relish and a green tomato mincemeat that was wonderful in a pie. You might need more than 3 however. Around here, people are always looking to buy green tomatoes so they can make fried ones.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this info. Relish sounds yummy. Interesting I wonder if it would be feasible to grow a tomato just to harvest green tomatoes? Sounds like yummy ideas! Thanks!
DeleteAs ladyhawthorne suggested; you can ripen up them tomatoes by putting in paper bag or wrapping in newspaper

dill pickle them
ReplyDeleteOoh, great idea, thanks!!!
DeleteMy favorite thing to do with green tomatoes is to lightly pickle them for salads. I save dill pickle juice, heat it up and pour it over sliced green tomatoes. Stick them in the fridge for a few days and add them to a salad. Yum!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a super easy idea too., thanks for that!!!
DeleteNothing beats fried green tomatoes! Except maybe the pie! I've seen them priced higher than ripe tomatoes in the grocery store!
ReplyDeleteFried is SO good but pie? YUM!!!!
DeleteGreen Tomato pie is very good. I try to find green tomatoes just so I can make it.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to look for a recipe, thanks for the tip (and you cook up some amazing food!!!)

Thanks, great idea, and now I know what to look for on "the google', ha.
DeleteGreen Tomato Chutney. Yum. And we often make it at the end of the season with those 'matoes which won't ripen.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this, great idea for end of season use!! There's bound to be some that won't ripen by the time it's "done" for the season.
DeleteI usually either let them ripen in a cool, dark place or - my favorite -make fried green tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteFor some different ideas:
The "sweet and tangy" bread-and-butter-style green tomato pickles looks especially good - from here:
http://southernfood.about.com/od/tomatoes/a/green_tomatoes.htm
This green tomato salsa verde looks good also: http://www.freshpreserving.com/green-tomato-salsa-verde---ball-fresh-preserving-br1033.html#q=green%2Btomato%2Bsalsa&start=1
And this relish: http://www.food.com/recipe/green-tomato-relish-hot-dog-relish-70538
Great links and the verde looks yummy too! Thanks!!!!
DeleteAlong with relish and pickles, green tomatoes also work very well in a stir-fry - they soften a little and become sweeter with the heat but wont be mushy.
ReplyDeleteHappy gardening and eating, Michelle
Wow, a great suggestion I didn't know about. Thank you!!!!!!! And welcome!!
DeleteI make Green tomato Mincemeat....as well as Green tomato relish. There are literally endless things to do with them!
ReplyDeleteYum, thanks for the tips! I'll have to do some googling!! :-)
