STORAGE UNIT FAUX BIRD CAGE FIND

Stopped off at our storage unit recently to see what we might have that we could use.  For those new to the blog, my parents have both passed away, unexpectedly about 5 years apart.  When my Dad died, we helped my Mom downsize and move to an apartment.  She wanted to keep stuff until she could figure out what to do with it.  Then, she passed away a few years later and I had to get everything out of her apartment before her lease was up. I added most of her stuff to the unit as well.

Flash forward to now when we are able to use the storage unit as a shopping booth for things for the farm.  It's kind of nice to find stuff that belonged to them that we can use out there.  This isn't old of course, I think my Mom found it at a store back in the 90's.  But it's a cool birdcage and it's fun and fits perfectly in this spot in the living room. Now if only the storage unit was neatly organized, life would be so much easier, LOL.  One of these days I suppose I'll get a wild hair and do that.

  1. I LOVE that bird cage... now, it just needs some lovebirds in it! I have a friend who re-purposed a big "entertainment" center as a large finch cage for her living room!

    1. Thanks! Do you know, growing up I had all sort of pets, dogs, cats, mice, hamsters and fish...but I've never had birds. I love lovebirds they are so pretty.

  2. I love that birdcage too. And I agree with Mary Ann, it needs some feathery inhabitants!
Finches perhaps or budgerigars (although they might be a little noisy!)
What is a storage unit? Is it a place where you keep things in storage, like a garage?

    1. Someday, I might just have to do that! Finches are cool looking little birds too.

Ah, a storage unit. They are all EVERYWHERE In the states. Here in Texas, it seems they are everywhere. They are big complexes built that are divided into small spaces with rollup doors. You rent them for a monthly fee and just keep your extra stuff in there that won't fit in maybe a smaller house or a garage that you use for your car instead of storing stuff. We're whittling it down, so that someday we won't have any, but until then, this works. :-)

    1. Thanks, I thought the same thing. I really have no idea where she got it but everyone that sees it always like it. I think it can actually be used as a bird cage, it has a metal tray that slides out in the bottom, side openings, etc.

  5. I Love the birdcage. I might think of placing an orchid inside or perhaps placing mixed succulents or cacti just to fill some of the bottom. but not block the artwork in the back. Those kinds of plants would work well for a weekend home because the watering need is so small.
I went through the same process when my Mom passed. I had just gotten my condo arranged just right & not too cluttered and then, in the rush to get things out of her home I loaded it with a hodge podge of things. I was still an emotional mess and could not think straight. A year later I was wondering what I had been thinking taking so many belongings just because it was too hard to see all her things go to an estate sale. I kept a few things that actually had meaning and called it good. You found a nice piece that is unique & now you actually have a place just right for it. The place is really looking more homey with each addition to the furnishings.

    1. Oh, great idea, thanks! Yeah the artwork in the back is great. That's what appealed to me too. You do understand don't you? We were the same, her passing was so sudden, and we had to get her apartment emptied out. It's actually all such a blur, it's hard to even remember what I put in storage, what I sold at consignment, what I gave away, etc. Each trip to storage is just like shopping at a store in a weird way.

    1. Thank you, I'm partial to the bunny too. With all the ones I've seen at the farm, it seemed somehow appropriate. :-)

  8. Oh, what a perfect cage! It's wonderful that you'll think of your mom every time you look at it,too.
I inherited my in-laws' home & everything in it. Between that and gathering things for my house, I've filled up 2 houses, my barn, a storage shed and a 3 car garage. I'm like "The Accidental Hoarder" or something.

    1. Yes, I see it in my mind in her house and where she had it and how she had it decorated. It's good memories and that's all that matters, right?

I had to laugh at "The Accidental Hoarder", ha. So so true for me as well....

  9. Wow, what a cool new addition to your home! You're right, that birdcage fits right in. I'm now very interested to know what else is in that storage unit, if your mother owned stuff as cool as this birdcage! Also, I think anyone who's ever owned or had to deal with storage units dreams of an organized one! Haha!
