COYOTE ENCOUNTER

So...I was watering the orchard area and I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye.  Something stood up and came out from under the shade of the trees on the property behind us.

At first I thought it was a fawn because there are quite a few deer on that property and it was smallish and tawny brown.  Then I realized it was a young coyote!

It looked at me, I looked at it and we stared at each other for what seemed like a long time.  It turned away and ran off another direction, periodically looking back.

It's not in this photo, this was taken after it ran off and I resumed watering so we could show you where I was and where it was. I think the watering and my timer going off after each watering was enough to make it run the other direction.

This is not the same coyote of course, but this is one we captured on the trail cam a couple of months back, one of many captures on the trail cam.  This one is walking across the front yard and down the driveway.

Look at the deep green, sigh.

Here are two more coming back from the other direction on another day.  We always hear that they are as scared of us as we are of them, but it's still a bit unnerving to just have one about 25 feet away.

We're gonna have to add this to the front yard!

Every year during Shark Week on Discovery Channel, we find some photos of the elusive farm sharks that appear from time to time at the farm...

Forget snakes, this is reason enough to stop and turn around on the mower for sure!

  1. Enjoy seeing your trail cam photos. Yes, your water timer going off will scare them off. Water coming on will also scare away the deer. They may not go far, but it is enough to scare them away.
Very, very seldom will coyotes attack humans. ( don't think the coyotes will mess with your shark tho. :} ) Donkeys will scare away coyote. Everyone around us who has farm animals will always have a donkey or 2 in with their livestock.
Take care, stay cool and have a great day and a wonderful evening.
They normally will go after pets; dogs, cats, farm animals; ducks, chickens, etc.

    1. We think we're having problem with the one we have left, it might be time to buy a new one. It's nice to see them and the wildlife around but they need to stay in their place and we'll stay in ours ha. Another hot week, stay cool!

  2. Yikes, that will get your attention! Kind of surprising that it ventured out in the middle of the day. They usually come out at dusk, prowl and hunt all night, then you’ll see them coming home in the early morning. When I lived in the country, this was a nightly occurrence. I never did get used to their eerie howling, especially close to my house. I had to have a 6 foot high chain-link fence to keep them away from my dogs.
It’s a good thing that you have that shark patrolling your Farm this week!

    1. It was sleeping in the shade I think and my timer kept going off as I watered each bed and I think I just made to much noise and motion and made it nervous. It left the shade of that tree for another one farther away.

    1. Yes I just saw that today in fact. So sad, she loved the peacocks. It was like a whole pack of coyotes. That's scary.

  4. Amazing how those farm sharks show up for you. You don't want to get caught by one of those bastards. They'll remove a leg or an arm or a head. They have no manners whatsoever. When we lived in the country in Illinois, one of our dogs, the late great Harper, would sit in the backyard at night to howl back at the coyotes. Sometimes he escaped from the yard (he was a Houdini). I was always grateful when he made it back unharmed.

    Love,
    Janie
