FARMERS ALMANAC 2013 AND BONUS

2013 Farmers Almanac courtesy of: Almanac.com

Came home from work last night and had a pleasant surprise in the mail.  I just received my copy of the 2013 Farmers Almanac. I know you can get these at just about any store or garden center, but I splurged and ordered the special hard copy edition. I figured it would make for nice reading at the farm and help with next year's garden planning.  Best of all, because I actually pre-ordered it earlier in the year (and honestly forgot, hence the surprise), there was a special gift they sent along with it....

...the companion calendar! It's funny, the other day I told 2nd Man that we'll need to get a cool calendar for the wall in the mudroom. Now we have one.  It will be nice to start the new year with this as it's not only full of fun facts and gardening info, the artwork each month is very pretty.  It will add a nice touch to the wall.  Do y'all use the old Farmer's Almanac?

For those of you in other parts of the world that don't know what this is, click HERE for the Wiki entry about it, and to visit the Farmers Almanac website, just click HERE.  There is lots of great gardening info on the website, no matter where you are.

  1. I'm afraid I have never heard of the old farmers almanac! I bet it is an interesting one to leaf through, whatever it is.

    1. You know, that's "my bad" as the young folk say, I never thought about the international readers who don't know about something that's so uniquely American. The Old Farmer's Almanac is an American gardening/farming institution. It's been around, published continuously, since 1792! It's all about forecasting the weather, telling farmers when to plant, harvest, moon cycles, tides, astronomical things, recipes, etc. It's pretty cool. It's just an "old school" way of gardening. They've done it so long they are pretty accurate, more often more accurate than weathermen, ha.

I've edited the post to have a hyperlink to the wiki entry about it, just for those who might not know. :-)

  2. I just looked through one for the first time recently. I'm going to buy one too since all farmers swear by them. For my planting guides, I've been looking online at the University of Georgia's schedule since they have a large agricultural program. I've never seen a calendar. It does seem to have some beautiful artwork.

    1. They paper soft cover copies are very inexpensive. The calendar I guess is new or maybe like you I never noticed it before, ha. It was a free gift with the hardcover copy so I thought that was kind of a fun surprise. I thought about getting a hardcover every year from now on, so that I can keep them on the shelf to look back at historical data after we started growing stuff at the farm. I could make my own notes in it for future reference. The calendar is pretty. I'll have to post once a mont (starting in January) with a picture!

    1. Yeah, I'm excited to have one and incorporate it into the planting and such. I want to write in it and make my own notes too. I'm saving it for heavy reading later on as Fall comes upon us. So I can start planning for Spring.

I wondered where you were, missed you! Glad you're back in cyberworld!

  4. Almanacs were big here until the 80's ... then it started to be a bit "esotherical" and people stop to buy them. Yours though seem to be like in the old day when it was still reliable.

    1. I think they are still pretty accurate and focus on gardening. But I don't have a frame of reference since i"ve never looked at an older one, ha.

  5. Love seeing the familiar cover. The Farmer's Almanac is just as accurate as some of the meteorologists I follow on the local TV news.
I secretly think Mother Nature laughs every time we think we know what the weather will do!
Seriously, a great book with lots of information and humor.

    1. I'm totally with you on the weather thing. I always say that being a weather person on tv is the only job where you can be wrong or screw up day after day and still keep your job, ha.

Glad to hear you like the book. I think I made a good decision!
